@balamdavinci in 1917 there was a tiny Republic called ukrane, they spoke ukrainian language which is something between Russian and Polish.
Communists then offered to give them pretty much 80% of the land that is ukrane today, which was populated by Russian speakers.
Then commies and Ukrainians spent about 15 years forcing ukranian language on the Russian speaking population. They failed and gave up in 1930s.
When ukrane got independence in 1991, 70% of population still spike Russian. You'd think the language spoken by most of the population would be the official, or at least a national language it wasn't. They made Ukrainian, the language of minority the official, but left Russian speakers alone. In 2014 the US overthrew the government and installed their puppets. The first law they passed was banging Russian language, schools, media, movies, books. Eastern regions where 99% of population support Russian rebeled, they refused to b recognize the illegitimate regime installed in Kiev and a civil war broke out.
Under international law - banning someone to speak their native language is considered an act of genocide. What Ukrane was doing and attempting to do was genocide, but no in the West cared, because they never go when it's them didn't it.
My wife is from Donbass - given the treatment they got from the Ukrainian government, her family there doesn't want anything to do with them. Fortunately for them, they are in Russian controlled territories now.
