The water turns into steam pretty much as soon as it enters the cylinder, and the engine spends more energy on compression stroke, the "extra" energy that you think you are getting from water is nothing but the engine recovering the extra energy it spent compressing it... Like tourist said - water injection improves power simply by creating cooler intake which increases density.

@paradiselost9946 holy crap are you dense... You still don't get it - it's irrelevant... All that latent heat will go out of the exhaust pipe without producing any useful work... None, zero zip. You can think of it as open cooling system. That's it.. If you eliminated a cooling system of an engine and instead introduced a DIRECT water injection at or post TDC, then you possibly could generate useful work by converting latent heat into pressure... But that's not whats going on here..
