The gap does not matter. What matters is if you have enough. If you are comparing to others you will never have enough. One thing unique to northeast Asia that you don’t see in the west is kids are kids into their 30’s. Why? In the U.S. kids work in high school and slowly start to be economically responsible for themselves like paying for car insurance and gas and clothing and entertainment. Maybe they earn some tuition as well. And then as they work full time they are adding on more essential life bills. In Korea you live at home so long and depend on parents money for much longer. It’s extended adolescence. By the time people are done with college and mandatory military and get a few years of work in they are already quite old. But the constant delaying of marriage and unacceptable of babies without marriage by the time it’s socially acceptable you won’t be able to have as many as you would want to have. Fertility starts to decline. What 34 year old wants to support a person until age 68? Years past their own retirement.

The homeless in Korea are the elderly that stopped having kids at one, gave that kid all their money for tutoring and school and living and buying them a house when they married only to have nothing left to live on. If these parents spent the money investing instead of on academies they would have better finances.

They didn’t like not knowing who their parents were so the government made a law saying a child needed to be registered. However it being on the registry hurts people cause until recently your prospective employer could find out if you were a single parent, orphaned, etc.. supposed to be illegal now. A few celebrities are going to have to be single parents, impossible as they are managed by their companies as indentured servants. It is said that Apink isn’t allowed cell phones. So much control over waking minutes. Crayon pop said the group members were responsible for the costs of setting up the group and got a smaller portion of the profits. The contracts are too long. Every player is a part of the company not a lawyer paid for by the entertainer. Another issue. Korea also lessened the number of adoption by foreigners. They are not a poor country anymore. And older adoptees felt like they were sold. If you can’t put the baby on your family register cause it will haunt you whether you raise it or not and the child for life if you do raise it or the child remains in Korea and that registry could be attached to them in some way, you will abandon it illegally. That means dead babies. Thank goodness for the brave pastor. These are unnecessary orphans. So many babies are simply staying in state care in Korea. Many are actually children from broken homes. Shared custody isn’t complicated.

For lack of sperm in the relationship, disability, accidental death and children’s lost to illness before growing up, and more. World wide fertility is 2.4. Barely replacement level. Poverty is an interesting term. To get a low rental housing you need a down payment of 60M. But that is like 6 years paying monthly rent. How many elders live in a few dollars a day? How many families have empty homes in the provinces so why are people complaining about housing costs. Such waste in the country. Why are single people moving into one bedroom and not senior couples leaving the larger units for families and newlyweds? A person working 40 hours a week is considered not having a job there? Cause it is not a full time position with a big company? If you decide only the 1% or 4% are doing fine and not in poverty you have a skewed outlook. The only reason the birth rate went from 6 to .7 is the government told everyone babies are costly and not worth it. Work 12 plus hours a day. Spend 3 years not 2 on mandatory military and 4 or more in university. Take the test over and over extending your nonproductive years to get a better score. They enlisted the media to push the narrative on tv and in movies. Neighbors got together to get birth control and harass neighbors who had that 3rd child. Irrational exuberance the growth is not sustainable for a developed country. 50% increase in housing in 4 years is not a positive achievement if you never let the price fall 20% in another 2 year period. They won’t let it fall they like the tax revenue from the sale too much. Poverty, ask your family born in 1954 - 1972 about poverty then and now. About freedom and dictatorship. About overreaching into personal affairs. They gave one time incentives to do sterilization. It’s a scandal. They made the public bend over backwards and deny themselves basic human rights so their job of government and economic benefit would be easy. And they kept those practices in place for many more decades than they should have fearing they would end up having to absorb millions from the north. The generation of today is not the sort that would swap their gold wedding bands and kids dol rings if there were another economic crisis or any kind of crisis. Because a teen not owning a long black North Face quilted jacket is poor. Because a 5 year old not attending 3 hours of hagwon afterschool doesn’t have parents who care about her education so don’t play with that kid. It’s all nonsense. As if it really matters if the kid lives in 24P in a high rise or a low rise building. It’s greed and superficial pride. I could care less if a classmate lived in a townhouse or single family or apartment. About whether they went back and forth to mom and dad during the week. Could care less if their parents worked for Apple or some small company doing computer programming. In the U.S. people having families don’t live in Manhattan. They live within an hour from Manhattan and commute to work. Single people live in Manhattan. Must everyone live in Seoul. Might as well give the rest of the country to China, Japan or Russia. South Korea might try artificial wombs and raising kids in orphanages and boarding schools. Since they hold kids until 10pm for voluntarily mandatory study time it’s like that already. Is there a childhood in the country and any family life with parents drinking with coworkers and kids at hagwon all hours? When 25% of children are born to women under 30 and the rest over 30 you are doomed. You can’t just decide to have 3 cause you have 4 bedroom apartment now at 33. You may get one. It might take a few years. You may have been better off getting a loan on apartment at 28 and marrying then. Prices just doubled in the complex you want to live in between 28 and 32. It was affordable at the time, you just got greedy and had to be overly clever. But if you started at 28 you could have had two or three before running out of eggs. You can only work until 55 some companies. Maybe it’s extended. But you will live until 80 and companies won’t keep on a 70 year old. That is decades of boring. No family. No spouse. No job. Why waste your youth? Spending every free moment from 11-25 on school and afterschool and military only to get 25 years at the actual job. Instead of spending 2200 a month on English kdg put 100 in a money market. When the kids is 45 they will have a million dollars. Inflation put 200 a month in a money market. Why piss away so much money thinking you need to to make money? You don’t. What you will need is people more than money when you are old. Already the ones working the market and harvesting the cabbage and fixing the fishing nets and diving for sea food are elderly women. That is your future.

Having watched Kdramas for over ten years why anyone would want to meet a rich person is beyond me. Evil and scary and what with the Korean Air famliy and the Chosun paper’s ten year old’s grandkid and daughter in law making the storylines real from what I read on the news sites if I lived in South Korea it would be Busan or Daegu for me. As far away from the Seoul elite as possible. I’d saved 60% on cost of living too. I’d probably get to see my family even. I know the parents do the students who died in the ferry sinking probably wished they spent time on a family vacation instead of kids doing even that separately.

It’s relative. I have seen many happy home house tours. It’s a program meant to give couples just married low rentals for a time to save to get a more permanent house and encourage babies. They are often 2 bedroom. Most often the other bedroom becomes a closet complete with clothing styler or an office. Afford to. It’s relative. When most the country didn’t have enough rice or shoes that fit people had 6 kids.

All the irrational growth just made the elderly poor and no one want to marry or have kids. Real estate prices need to go down. English needs to be removed from the college exam so there is not pressure to pay for lessons. Korea needs to build apartments for people to live in who don’t already own an apartment. They need to get rid of Airbnb and think about the housing stock that takes away from actual citizens working and living in Korea. Most their brightest students study abroad and stay abroad. The college elitism is terrible. There is no respect for hard jobs. It’s too small a country to get away from corrupt people who can damage entire families when they are in a bad mood.

79 years ago it ended. My MIL was alive for the attack on Pearl Harbor living in Hawaii. Her mother carried her into a sugar cane field. They didn’t know it was coming and which or all habited islands effected. But she was 2 months old at the time. For a man to be of fighting age assuming teens involved a person would have to be well over 90.

Japan bombed the U.S. first. May God have mercy on the dead all around. Do I feel guilty as an American? No. They started it. It decidedly freed many prisoners, many countries freed, thank goodness we got it before an axis power and less of our guys died if it had to be a land invasion. I watched Grave of the Fireflies. I was irritated by the boy saying how the emperor would make them pay and hearing long live the emperor. What did he think his father was doing to people as ordered by the emperor for decades by the first Tokyo bombings? Japan was bombing others and invading and annexing and interning others. Also made no sense why Mom would go on to the bomb shelter and leave the kids behind to follow. I have seen some Japanese YouTube channels where an earthquake tremor occurs and the moms are running for their toddlers and covering the toddler protectively with their bodies. I’m sure Oppenheimer would irritate the Japanese the same way Grave of the Fireflies irritated me. Every American made movie need not be shown in every country. Americans are not bothered by the peace park in Japan. Why are Japanese bothered about comfort statues in Korea? Germany isn’t bothered by the remnants of WWII still standing as reminder. Japan hasn’t fully owned Nanking either. Yet U.S. and Japan have a fine relationship soon after the war and continued for decades. I’m sorry goes a long way. I’m not sure I want to see Oppenheimer. I don’t know how woke it is going to be.

@an0nycat .5% live in Gangnam. Not only is it about living in Seoul there is elitism over which part. The press is always using Gangnam as the benchmark. Prices were up .7% this month in Gangnam. It’s like only hearing about US real estate what happened in Beverly Hills. Or Palo Alto. And that does something to public mindset. It suggests what happened there happened everywhere, which it may not have. And it suggests it’s the only place that matters. You know why so many live in half basements in Seoul. The address. They could live in a perfectly fine 18P place with multiple rooms somewhere else, even within the capital region.

@Doobedoobedooba actually it’s a hold over from under the monarchy. You lived where you were born. When a woman married she left her home town for her husbands. There was no mobility of location unless you passed the civil servant exam. Suddenly people were forced to move during the occupation by Japan or to flee the soldiers from North Korea. It’s a country where many are not happy where they are at. But now people can in some ways decide where to live within the North or the South. There was capitalism when the world was rural and most had to live near and work for their food source. Even when Korea was like that the homes were all gathered together and then people worked their plot of land. Not like the US where the house is on the plot of land and far from neighbors dwellings. There has always been a trend to live close to each other.

Except when all families are small people put all their money into their small family. There is always something to compare to to feel you are behind and someone else is ahead. China should not say 1,2 or 3 children. They should make an economy that can support whatever the individual wants in terms of family size.

@snowdrop118 define poverty. There was another documentary about how people who are young are in debt. A guy spent 200M and lost his 300M apartment to crypto or day trading. The reason was not cause he didn’t have a job, or money in the bank or a place to live. It was cause he decided he was poor if he didn’t live in Gangnam and it would take too many years on his salary to buy a place in Gangnam. OMG. 🙄 Someone has to do the lower paying jobs. We learned during COVID who is essential and who isn’t. They closed school and the grocery store check out person still had a job. There is your answer. You realize a hundred years ago shoes were a luxury, any school for boys and girls required a fee so literacy not common, a doctor was a once in a lifetime luxury it often went badly and rice was sent elsewhere/fish not always present. Family was the treasure and sign of abundance and blessing. Not handbags nor new gadgets. If the 5M bag is so great why do you need a roomful of them? No one is saying everyone have 5. For some to go childless some need to have 3 or more.

Trying to get Seoul residents to have two kids makes no sense until the seniors die and their family sized apartments become vacant. New Sejong was showing a high fertility rate. Cause so many working for gov they let people leave on time maybe? Cause a newer city they have the infrastructure for day care? The trouble is unlike the 90’s when women had kids in their 20’s now they are having kids in their 30’s, if they still can and don’t have grandparents to help. Or aunts and uncles. Cause so many in their 30’s are singletons. 3 generations alive soon instead of 4.

It’s the same with lying about address, education or work history. Korea can not tolerate when a person appears outside their genuine class. Weird place in some ways. The fault is the people who made and sold the fake stuff. How does the purchaser know? They don’t have brand names on the college entrance exam. I’m really confused about how she did work for some of the brands. Surely they would know if the stuff she had of their fake. Why does punishment extend to family. Is this North Korea? Is anyone checking where she bought the fake goods worn to close it down? Probably not. It’s about bashing on someone cause society says it’s okay to do so.

Can someone tell me why a 5 year old living in Korea has to be fluent in English? Why is this subject on the Korean college entrance exam. Korean universities conduct classes in Korean. For all the great test scores somewhere along the line the place lost all common sense. Further preparing every child to leave Korea for college which means they will stay abroad for work will only make worse the problem. I’m not saying not have the subject as a class but stop testing subject for college entry. In the U.S. only language arts and Math really matter. Students are not tested for how good they are in French or Japanese to attend college.

Call me a capitalist but why in the name of all that is good can’t the government of China not have a specific number of children per couple? For decades most the country have more than 1 pair of shoes, access to education, access to medical care and a varied diet. Now they have this economy set up, housing set up for single people, childless couples and one child families. I’d like the government of China not to decide what age or what number or whether the person is married or single and let them have the babies that come!

@Treavor Martin They kept 1 child policy too long. Day care has been invented. Before couples waiting until 30’s to have kids grandparents young enough to help raise as well. Neither parent has to stop working. In the west the parents that stop want to cause honestly you can work your whole life you can only parent a few years. Going back to work after a time out of the work force is no problem. Going to school later in life to get a different degree or skill is also no problem. Getting hired when older is also no big deal. The oldest person is not always right. No workplace issues having a boss younger than you. It’s not seen as lazy to have a break. They wanted the birth rate to be below replacement. When you encourage extra birth or encourage a reduction in births you get a short term economic boom. Then heck breaks loose. No country should every go out of their way to encourage more than 4 or less than 2. And only for extreme reason should it get involved at all. Russia encouraged 5 boys for the army China said 1 or none. Both had a ridiculous number of children in state care and sent many of them off for international adoption. When a government gets too involved it ends up with a lot of kids on its hands.

@jayq2571 it started in 1904/1905. You see WWII in the pacific didn’t start with the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Japan had been invading, killing, raping, taking, annexing, interning, committing genocide, relocating, starving, forced labor and expanding for decades before. The first time Japan proper was bombed, finally their land seeing some of what war looks like, was 1942. Those were not atomic. The reason we are stationed in Japan ever since is so neighbors don’t retaliate and they don’t need an army again to defend themselves if they do. And so neighbors don’t worry they will build an army/navy and go exploring again. The reason we have been in Korea almost as long as the North and South has a ceasefire since the 50’s. It never ended. The second country to get the bomb was the USSR in 1949. So each side in that war had the bomb so it was basically keep bombing the others until no buildings left. Nothing decisive. If no one but the USSR had it in 1949 would they not have gone back to 1905 and wanted control over the region again? Defeating Japan and having their influence in China and Korea or flat out taking bits of it over? The Russia revolution occurred cause they suffered losses in the Russian Japanese war of 1904.

Please read up on Korea and China before the U.S. entered the war when attacked by bombs suddenly that Sunday morning. Think of the hospital they hit. Japan wartime atrocities to help you Google. Hundreds of thousands killed marching to Nanking few were soldiers among the victims. What did the Japanese think their country was doing for decades? That is what bombing is like for civilians. They had not even a taste of that until 1942 (not atomic) and then finally 1945. It took doing it twice.

@zoespam10000 Japan apologized to the U.S. for the war. Japan denies the number of the Nanking massacre and denies comfort women issue and wants the statues of it in Korea removed. Most comfort women Korean. They made many Koreans go to Japan for labor and many have remained and are basically residents with no citizenship. They pressured for intermarriages, forced Japanese language, etc.. then the north and south divide happened soon after. So many reasons a percent of them failed to return. The reason the U.S. in Japan all these years is their neighbors concerned they will go exploring again. But if Japan does not have a military they are at risk for retaliation. So we babysit. Japan does not have a military to invade and no one will attack Japan with the U.S. there. Its neighbors are not happy with their actions after the end of the war. Probably because the U.S. finished it with the bombings. It was not China or Korea or name your country Japan pissed off many countries. It is hard to cheer about the success of a weapon. It is also not right to sit by when another is being an aggressor and so many are suffering. The real thing of interest is the U.S. and Japan have gotten to a really good relationship rather quickly after all of that. Both countries doing well economically high in the world ranking. Korea will hold a grudge longer than the Irish will toward England. And that has been going on for many centuries.

The trouble with Korea is parents don’t stop raising the kids when they are in college. Or get their first job. The problem is this group think that has been gaslighted for decades in order to keep people from having more than 1 or 2 never ended. When all this family planning began not all kids went to middle school, had proper shoes or rice. The exponential growth pushed elderly into poverty.

BTS needs to get married and each have 3 kids to turn the public opinion of having kids. What really needs to happen is more mothers in their 20’s. Not having babies until 30’s is compounding the problem. Instead of 4 generations of people there will be only 3 generations alive at a time. The reason this. Issue was not a problem and why the family planning projects didn’t let up in the 80’s once replacement levels were made was suddenly seniors were living longer.

@lornam1142 Korean fans are no joke. The collective in the 60’s all jumped on the don’t have kids, even if the first or second are girls. It became a trend. There was no law like in China to have only one child. People went together in groups to get fixed. Just have two and raise them well. Even one is too many for our crowded country. That is what the posters said. And the sentiment. It was in all the shows. How troublesome it was to have 3 or more. How prosperous a single child made your life. And at some point they got priority in the housing lottery for going to drastic steps of getting fixed. But a lot of it was peer pressure. Like people wore masks in public. Peer pressure. Christianity influence needs to spread cause they are pretty good about welcoming children and not having greed. No one wants the people who passed to be reincarnated to Korea it seems. Once having 2 kids is a sign of affluence like a Prada bag is, people will have 2.

I am saying the example of marrying and having kids is in the telling. Not just a reporter saying the gov is concerned about birth rate.

What stability? No one on any spot on planet earth can be certain of stability for a 30 year period.

@lornam1142 people back then didn’t have the means to live past 60. People back then didn’t have the means to choose their profession. Can’t have it both ways. The government paid people to get sterilized. You got an apartment faster. Having one son meant no military for him for a short period of time. The lengths they went to were not as bad as China. But not far off either.

The countries that practice socialism are not ones people try to illegally or legally migrate to in large numbers or last all that long without some other government type taking over. Anything collectively paid for gets rationed excluding many. There is a caste system in North Korea and you can only go down in that system. It’s based on who your uncle is or your husbands cousin. It’s as irrational as racism. Just now we hear that parents will be sent to labor camps and their kids shipped off separately for other internment if caught watching foreign movies.

A school and library in a capitalist country versus a school and library in a socialist or communist country are vastly different. Even their funding can not really be compared. As doing Business in a capitalist country compared with a socialist or communist country. They are trying to convince students that they are already 30% socialist communist. Let us take North Korea or China. You need a permit to live in a particular province or city. If you move for work and are migrants within your own country your kids won’t be permitted to enter the school where you are working. Now let’s look at the U.S. a person can move between border with no obstacle and their children can move with them and go to the local school. A North Korean can’t move at all even for work splitting up the family. The child of a worker who has to go elsewhere for work stays with grandparents in the rural village and learning is limited to what that local school can provide. I was a librarian. The library in the community with more business had more taxes coming in and I got a bigger budget to buy kids books and hire programming. And that business had no fear of the government taking it over. Or the employees taking the manager hostage to get more wages and the government not giving a darn about it. Seems to happen in China all the time. In the US the swat team would be called so doesn’t really happen here. Who is paid better the worker in US or the worker in China? In the US the government breaks up monopolies. It doesn’t take over the companies like Venezuela.

It drives me mad to see real estate articles in English language news talking about increase or decline and always bringing up Gangnam and always Seoul. This notion of affordability and assumption of career problems all stems from everything being relative since birth. Your grades and ranking don’t depend on how you did on the test but how everyone else did. The top 4% are the first tier. The bottom 4% the last tier. Doesn’t matter if the last tier all got 75% on the test. A solid c. I just matters that 96 people got less wrong on the test. So now they are grown ups and see their friend has a bigger house, better brand company to work for and they don’t have kids. So they assume they don’t rank having kids cause they are so far behind… not cause they don’t have a good relationship and a job. It is goofy and won’t be worked out for 25 more years.

Yep. People don’t know what family is. They don’t get to spend any time. I hoped with COVID they would have had time together. But nope. Not really. What is worse is having no independence from parents into your 30’s until you marry. What 34 year old wants to spend the next 34 years micromanaging and financially supporting another human being. Especially when they will have to retire at 57 and they will be 68 before their kid is 34 if they have one. In Korea you get allowance far too long and never have responsibility for your own expenses. In the U.S. high school kids work ant some point and in baby steps start being financially responsible for some things. Maybe it’s the car insurance. It’s probably the gasoline and the entertainment. Maybe some of their clothes. Then in college they may pay part of it. Or books covering more things. Then they get a job and start paying off loans or start a car payment. Maybe a year later they move out and pay rent and utilities and may only get help from parents for unusual circumstances or life events like weddings. There is a bizarre codependency going on.

20% of Koreans live in Seoul. More in the surrounding area. How can anyone afford an average apartment of 600K. Koreans were better off after the war. There is school for all, medical assessable, everyone has rice and clothes and shoes but people don’t think they can afford to get married and have kids and don’t really want to because they didn’t see a marriage with working 16 hours a day and didn’t spend time together as a family what with studying 16 hours a day. If your childhood stunk why would you have kids. In another generation the apartments will be empty and cost of living will be cheap and people will start to be able to think they can work 8-10 hours 5 days a week, not drink with their boss all night and have 3 kids.

A small college in the states would be more impressive than a college in Korea to Koreans. First SKY, then Ivy League abroad, then Korean National universities, then schools in Seoul, then schools outside Korea, then Korean schools outside of Seoul. Chem 101 and speech 101 is the same in all of them. I live in the Midwest. We are far too sensible. On the East coast in an handful of cities in the US I may think where I go matters. Spending 200K instead of 100K to get a degree when you are only going to make 40K a year isn’t smart. Would you hire someone with a huge student loan the size of a mortgage who also has to make a living in the present? Imagine the salary demands and financial stress the employee is under.

I went to a private Catholic school in the US where 96%-98% went to college. I understand parents spending money and kids with pressure. It just didn’t matter which college we went to. Some went to a top school, although with what I see on the news what goes on there I would not want to pay for that. Some went to private university or state schools. It’s not a big deal which one. We can take the ACT and SAT during high school more than once. It’s best or an average. There is a limit to how often.

It doesn’t make sense to go to Ivy League for some majors because they cost so much in private school tuition. It is paying for the name. Surely more than 5% of the country is productive? The wasted income of years studying. The money spent on study room and room in study house. The lack of income for the years in military for men and the years in college and extra years studying and money spent of tutors from elementary school on up just to get a job in a conglomerate where they make you retire around 55 anyway makes no sense. If a parent took half that money wasted and put it into the stock market or gold the child would have a better financial start or at least they themselves would have a viable retirement.

@pratikgaurav9943 everyone has to work hard. The coveted spots are hell in Korea. If you are not family you will always be in a lower position. Why must a child of a doctor become a doctor to inherit a hospital. Why must a hospital be inherited? With everyone working 16 hours to study surely many others are capable. Someone else can run Korean Air and Samsung. In the US the top schools are private and four times an already ridiculous amount. The ones attending already spending a lot of money on private education in lower grades. It makes no sense to leave college with a loan the size of a mortgage. Your skills matter. Apple doesn’t just hire people from Ivy League. And they work people more than 40 hours orchard on campus or not they are not family friendly. If your parents invested in Apple instead of paying for private academy you would be set. Those who get the big company positions will be retired in their 50’s and making chicken anyway. There are many paths in life that lead to contentment and security.

You don’t get an A if you get 90% right. Or 93% right. You get an A if you were the 4% highest with the least wrong. It’s maddening how relative everything is. It is why adults do not function. They can not move out if a senior didn’t move out. If they don’t marry as fast as their classmates above them they won’t be able to marry at all in their minds. If their senior does not marry they won’t. No one is having kids cause they are too expensive. If someone was 4/9 in class ranking categories how can they have a child?

This can all be traced to the dictatorships and push for every student to go to college. No natural resources to speak of so they must rely on human capital. But they end up with too many graduates. And when a graduate is working at a job not related to their degree they consider themselves jobless. To get as many as possible going to college they made unsavory every job that does not require a degree. Then Koreans have become accustom to free housing. They save a big down payment while living at home forever. Then they pay an owner full value of half the property in cash which they get back at the end of 2 years. The owner takes the renters lump sum and invests it. It is the weirdest shell game in the world. Because of this the gov will never let home prices fall. The landlord either extracts thousands more to renew the lease or the tenant leaves with the landlord taking the next tenants lump sum to pay back the tenant leaving. If prices drop the housing market will collapse. Besides they like capital gain taxes and death taxes. In typical capitalism it’s a supply and demand and you keep building to keep the prices stable. In a healthy economy there are economic cycles with pull backs. Yes prices can climb in a few years time but they also can drastically pull back in a few years time and may not recover for a while. But we also don’t move every other year. Most are fine. It gives people the chance to get a property when they pull back. Those on the ladder will also increase when prices are up and they can still move into a larger place if necessary cause their current place added value. The real estate market in Korea turns over too much. They can’t see the long term picture. Further they don’t have as favorable loans to those wanting to buy as for those needing those lump sums just to rent. The building they are doing is for single people. The older properties are being used as AIRb&B’s. That is where the newlyweds would have started out, screwing up starter home and long term rental market. Meanwhile the place must not have internet or people could work from their family properties in the provinces in the family for centuries. I jest. Seriously though remote work could save the entire country. People could live anywhere. Not all jobs but surely COVID shows us all people don’t have to go into a building to be productive in all jobs.

Most people entering a company will never use English for their job. It is as sensible as having it as a University test. Having it as a subject is fine. Korea was worried about population growth, but that was why the country grew economically. Korea’s population will drop by more than 10 million people in 15 years. Unless people start having children in their 20’s again. You see people are becoming grandparents in their 60’s now instead of their 40’s and 50’s. A generation is becoming rare.

The second biggest sin is academic dishonesty and lying about your academic background, the third biggest sin is murder… Honestly he has every right to appreciate them, he gets to see them both. How are you going to assist your mom and pay your bills at the same time when she gets sick? You did not marry. You are one income. China may have killed everyone for 9 generations in a poor maid’s family in the palace cause she helped her mistress poison an heir. But usually family is an asset, even the screwed up relations. It’s not usually fatal. The entire reason we live and breath is relationships with others. Not to build a better mousetrap, acquire gold or be really clever for 70 years only to be compost. We are certainly not here to amuse and serve ‘the leader’.

@wip1664 I have skin in the game. I am thrilled to parent but I hate the reason why I am able to parent. I have one child, a son born in China. I am parenting because the government of China decides when a person can marry and when a person can have one child and when a person no longer can have children. Maybe mom was an adult but not old enough for officials to marry? Perhaps old enough but it would be outside their quota? Maybe it was a second pregnancy? There are a multiple number of maybe’s. Why did he have to sacrifice his parents and they him? Leave uncle’s gambling debts and consequences to uncle this a parent child separation we are talking about. Because the government controlled and managed resources and asked too much of the population to be able to do so. Obviously nature is not just wanting humans to have one child. About 15 years of a woman’s 20’s and 30’s is pregnancy with a good outcome possible. Why would nature give humans such a long fertile period past education and training age to only have one child? Gestation is 40 weeks and weening takes weeks to maybe a year. Once the child can eat solids it’s really not necessary to keep doing it. Does not make sense to only have 1. A couple could easily have 4 kids with good spacing. If you are going to advocate for many to be childless, and they should be if they want that, others will have to have more than 2 kids. The public won’t believe they have been lied to for 40 years. They will continue to think society and government wants 1 or less babies from them individually.

The only thing that will destroy the planet is if the magma stops coming to the ocean and land surface, the seas stop moving, the air stops moving, Mother Nature is not starving people, it’s leaders in countries like North Korea that cause starvation to occur. Like the English did the Irish in the 19th century. Man made problem. More or less people change the ratio. The fertility rate was much higher a century ago and yet we more than doubled the production of rice and expanded housing vertical leaving land free for farming and wildlife in the process. Wife takes a leave with not the same worry as if single cause her household has another income earner in it. If she is single no one is working. If there is another daughter they can take turns being with mom when she goes for her knee replacement. Then they both can continue to earn half their pay. Or the one with a job with family leave takes it. The single woman her unmarried mom are stuck.

@wip1664 raising a child watching preschool tv shows I overheard directly into the program or a PSA commercial between programs to “reduce, reuse, recycle”, climate change, alternative energy, environment or the phrase the planet about 2 times per hour. As he got older it was about 4 times per hour of programming. When covid hit I was next to him for several months and wouldn’t you know it has made its way into every subject. Ironically he also learning in science how the earth’s crust rises and fall. It’s not only dependent on the ice at the poles. But really no attention to how it contradicts. Even his speech therapy assignments included content to read and answer questions about climate change. I went to parochial school and didn’t hear or read the words God or Jesus this much. Saying the word 1000 times a year every year will not make it so. There is a hint of the Great Leap Forward in all this and we know how that turned out. The oldest man made structure in the world is at best 5000 years old. Planet is billions of years old and humans around tens of million years. There were cities that rose and fell often. We did not suddenly figure out tools 5000 years ago. People have relocated often. The earth has always changed. It is not linear but snowball in speed. My husband was born in an island that was existing above water a million years ago. Because of plate movements it will be gone in 50-80 million years. Not because someone drive a gas powered car on it. The earth isn’t our mother. The first human cell did not come from the planet.

@wip1664 my mom is fine. There have been times my late father or my mom have had a medical issue. Thank goodness I was married. Thank goodness I have a sibling. Thank goodness I have cousins. Thank goodness they had siblings (my aunts and uncles) to be quite honest. It really helped with child care, keeping the mortgage paid, and for caregiving of the person who was ill while getting a few breaks and supporting one another. I had family leave for my father, my sister did not. It was great one of us had it. For mom it was great I was home with my child and we both were not busy 10-2 on Wednesdays. For my grandmother it was great my cousin was free to drive her to appointments. They appreciated all the people around them. That is why two or more generations having one kid or none a bad idea. People in large part avoiding marriage a bad idea. There are many in China right now without any siblings or cousins to help care a grandparent or parent. They are doing it alone all for the government butting in. 2 child regulations began in the 70’s. That is a long time to control people.

@wip1664 yes. But my father who passed away and my mom who is alive both have had health incidents. They greatly benefited from having each other, children and their own siblings around. They also benefited from having siblings, children and nieces/nephews to help when their own parents were declining. It is too many generations leaving many without siblings and cousins and aunt/uncles in China. I’d hate for this to be the norm.

The biggest environmental problem in northeast Asia is the dust trim the desert making the air quality poor in China and and Korea. But you can not control the wind. It is the earth distributing nutrients from one region to another, just like it distributes precipitation from one area to the next. It’s it not people. Areas that were sea bed are not mountains. Areas that were tropical are not in the Antarctic. The news, government and published science is focusing too much on the atmosphere. They have forgotten the other scientific categories. It’s the earth if flat people all over again. We have very little date from proper instruments in the short written history of humans. Let us take Just Harry as an example. He flew on a private plane as well of tons of self important people flying privately to the Mediterranean for a google camp to talk about the environment. He promised to only have one other child with his then 38 year old wife. (Eye roll she is is 38 women are not usually fertile without help in their 40’s if they started having late in life already). Did google ever hear of google meets? It’s a tech company. They could not have saved the plane fuel? Pollution you can see is my concern. Used plastics should be processed or buried without having to go on a boat so they don’t get into the stomach of wildlife. They won’t bag cause of covid anymore but at least there is a drop off of the plastic bags at the stores. I mostly use reusable water bottles. My country but for one town has safe water. The world will not end in 2031 like AOC says. There need to be young workers to care of you when you are 77 or 87. Population should always be a little over replacement.

Do you have a phone to call 911/119? Can you attend college at 18 or 58? Can you chose your occupation? Can you change occupation? We are more comfortable than we have been in the past. They have stopped teaching history. In the past you would not be able to divorce. You would not have chosen your spouse. You may not have been allowed to marry at all. You can have no children or 20. Why is a society so better off than the past feeling they are not getting by okay? Why do we think people will starve if there are 3 people in a 3 bedroom apartment of 900ft2? Now one room is a closet instead of a bedroom with a child in it.
