Swim with dad is great. It’s nice to see amiable parenting after a break up.

The lunchroom did not change they just got around it by getting companies to send smaller bags of chips. It was the classrooms that suddenly changed. He was shamed over a cookie once. Every day I’d send half a sandwich ham dry no Mayo on whole wheat and a snack size baggie of grapes and another snack size bag of apple slices. I always sent water. On Friday I threw in a single cookie and he got told it was a sometimes food. To be fair open house hadn’t happened and she didn’t tell us their policy. I wish she hadn’t said anything until the open house to be fair to me. Therapist at the school constantly rewarded with candy which he liked getting but never ate. He had a really limited food range which is part why I sent lunch. But I will say the classroom always allowed water bottles at the desk if they had a lid. They had a snack time through elementary. At first they just asked no pop or candy be sent in lunches. But since the kids took snack from what was put in the lunch I tried to make sure a banned item like that cookie were not in there. Crackers fine chips not. Some of the things made no sense. But I liked the classroom rule. They were there 7 hours and I can give a cookie when he gets home. He would be limited to eating what I put in the lunch when at school. When they are young it’s really about them having a handful of foods that they won’t refuse that are good for them. And hopefully build on. When I was in first it was a sandwich on white and a cupcake or bag of chips and something to drink milk from school or 6-8 ounce juice box warm. I found the school expected me to send multiple things besides the sandwich and 2 sides since they had my kids eating and drinking all day long. I am glad no pop for sale at school. Half of his drink is water and he still likes milk. I think the water bottle available at all times in school really helped establish the habit as he is now a teen. I really think the constant eating at school and hot meals are a serious problem. Why are they having supper in the middle of the day before their teens? Because some kids don’t have enough at home? All the school portions are bigger than a frozen entree an adult might have at work. Probably less salt. And now schools are offering breakfast. It’s all very social. If a 7 year old needs 1200 calories and they are getting 300 at breakfast and 400 for lunch and getting seconds I can see some having 500 for dinner or 700 in crips in front of tv instead of a meal. Not to mention the drinks.

When the school gives a hot dinner for lunch and breakfast sometimes too and has snack time in the morning… The roles are reversed. It seems cause we don’t want some kids to be hungry at home we have full dinners at lunch time with seconds. I do want kids fed at school that don’t have much at home. Maybe dinner at home should be a simple sandwich since they are having Spagetti with meat and sauce and something covered in gravy with juice at school. In the 70’s and 80’s until 14 I brought a lunch. Tiny juice box or school milk, crisps snack size small and a ham sandwich. No snack time. Maybe a sip from the fountain. Maybe 10% of the class larger than the rest. Out of 30 kids maybe 3. Now out of 24 kids 6 or 7. We could barely get in half our calories until 3pm. So a snack before dinner fine. There is no routine of eating anymore. No fish on Friday and pasta on Monday. We eat whatever we feel like. We try new recipes. When we shopped once a week if we went through the snack bag there wasn’t anymore. Now we go back or order more groceries. We knew how much carrot and potato and chicken to buy and were used to a certain amount on the plate so there would be enough carrots to go around. It was a familiar meal. There was none of this strawberries out of season they cost too much and were only a half dozen containers of them anyway in February.

Why do they get seconds at school? Maybe if the seconds could only be produce..? I suppose the kids with nothing at home they want to feed seconds to so have to do all.
