  7. People are not having kids. It costs too much and is inconvenient. There is a virus. Everyone is masking up. They spent two decades working adults to death, relocating most adults to the larger cities particularly the Seoul metropolitan area. They encourage neighbors to go and get sterilized together for the good of the country. Promised military exemption for families with only one son, though that didn’t last long. They gave preference to housing lottery if you stopped at 1 or 2. In programming they showed success for families that were small and difficulty and worry with large families. It worked. In 1980 it was 2 kids per woman. Only they didn’t stop. They were emerging. Irrational exuberance was not slowing down. Now the country is developed and those gains ridiculous. We have elders that had one child. Outlived them and can’t afford noodles collecting boxes on the street. There are elders who never married cause the gender imbalance. When 1 makes you rich and 2 make you poor and the first is a boy you don’t keep going. The age of death went from 60 to 80. It’s the only reason the crisis didn’t happen in 2000. There is no reason people have to work more than 8 hours a day with youth unemployment, people not wanting to leave at 55 and people wanting to get back in workforce or change companies. In Korea everyone does what everyone else is doing. If your boss has one you have one. If your classmate from high school send their 10 year to English camp for the summer you do it to. All these updates are telling people no one is having kids, stay the course. No one cares about real estate cause no one has kids that would need a place. They will get their own one day. So prices can irrationally climb. 40% increase in 5 years success. .2% decline in a quarter failure. And short term changes matter because of Jeonse. Parents may move for school a few times for the kids. When the gov relocated gov workers to New Sejong most spouses stayed in Seoul with the kids. Although that area now has a better birth rate than most the country. I think it’s cause many workers have family in Seoul they naturally. Don’t expect much outside of work. This mean all employees get to go home and don’t have to drink all night with their divorced boss who is lonely. If you spend time and home you enjoy life. Your kids may remember family life at 30 and have a kid or two themselves. Those 30 now never saw their parents. They were working or the child in hagwon or mandatory study at school or study rooms to all hours of the night. Why would they want a family? What is that? These people will have no career at 50 or 55. What are they going to do for 25 years?

  13. U.S. if a free economy. Parenthood works well. Soon Seoul will be hiring women from other countries to be gestational carriers for producing children. The kids will be cared for by the state. They will go to boarding school. The country already has been housing children for 70 years. And indirectly raising middle and high school kids for a few decades with mandatory study at school until 9-11pm. School open on weekends and during school breaks so kids can study. Korea has destroyed the family. That is the problem. It will go to science as the answer.

  15. Speaking of brainwashed instead of religion or atheism environmentalism is the new religion. You hear something 1000 times it becomes truth. My kid hears climate change in public school more than I head God in Catholic school. A cult takes up time, unreasonably amount of money and separates from family and friends. Scary things to be sure. The people gluing themselves to the road separating themselves from others are either paid or in some cult financed by whom?

  17.  @Hutchdh  no. It’s two years of mandatory military for men. Then college 4 years unless they took another year to take the test again. Then it’s employment and the initial intern period. Then it’s the fact housing went from 500K to 800K in 4 years on average with men not able to even enter the job market full time until the age of 26. You have to combined as a couple save hundreds of thousands to even get a Jeonse loan. By that time a woman is over 30 and a man is a few years older. Fertility declines rapidly if they even try to start a family in the first year it will take longer to get pregnant if they bother at all. So maybe a single child can be born to such a couple, perhaps 2? Because their parents did the same thing they have been forced to retire before the kids are old enough to marry so they can’t set them up like they used to. In fact the parents may need kids earnings for health care and other living expenses. No one grew up with their parents always at work and they were at school until 10. Who knows what a happy healthy family life is anymore?

Do you know how aggressive the UN has been at trying to get contraception into the Southern Hemisphere? They should be passing out mosquito nets, immunizing people, handing out classroom supply boxes and enforcing the inspections at nuclear facilities for countries trying to get a bomb unlike Iraq. There are not too many people on earth.

  21. The population of the county is 23,000. Korea wants everyone to live in or near Seoul. They will not abide housing correction prices. It’s mad. It’s like encouraging everyone to live in Manhattan and wondering why few people have 1 or 2 kids. People in Seoul don’t downsize like in other parts of the world. You have youth in studios and 60 year olds in 4 bed apartments. Korea requires men to serve a few years. Then college. Then the notion of a fully paid for home or hundreds of thousands for a jeonse loan you get back at the end of a two year contract. People always moving cause they are doing these short term contracts and not buying until 40 or so. You can’t just get married in your 30’s and expect to have 1 or 2 kids. This generation could study so no one every home between work and hagwon. No one knows what family is, how to have one? Why to have one? They don’t tolerate raising children with never married couples also allowed to marry later and have kids with second spouses. They have 300K abortions annually. If people didn’t abort due to society telling them to there would be no problem. Korea wanted to enrich everyone by limiting births to 1 kid. They did this for 30 years. They wanted this.

The increase in standard of living came because the population grew because people lived longer and some nations allowed the baby boom. 2.2 is replacement fertility. Since 1950’s we increased rice production 10x, increased in high density living, etc… Plenty of room. Change the channel.

  30. They don’t want to go to 10 hagwons. Why in Korea does taking off months to a few years matter? Get rid of hierarchy. Get rid of stigma of never married couples coparenting and partner later having additional kids with everyone getting along. 300K abortions each year before made legal? They didn’t want abortions. Not all of them. Send people home at 6. Kids too. If there is still work hire more people. Lots would like to return, not retire so young and many youth trying to enter the job market. Now there is people for that. Now is the time. For college entrance exam just test math and Korean. Why is English on there? Not just to make it easier to take students objectively when so many already do well. It’s so students can study abroad for university and stay away for work. A double blow to the problem. No one is having babies and some of the brightest leaving the country.
