I am a retired police officer too (1979-2009) and I rarely tell anyone. I am ashamed of what the police have become and I wonder how ANYONE can deal with legal matters and yet can't read or write!! How could they have ANY idea of the law or uphold it? This really is Alice in Wonderland these days.

@stevei0220 Yes, we used to say 'the Job's f'ked' when I started in 1979 but we didn't realise back then just how f'ked up it would actually become!

@catch22again Unfortunately the destruction of public services is all by design. This started with the police when they brought in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. Everything which worked in the 'force' deteriorated on a monthly basis and it never recovered. They did bring in the Harrassment Act in the late 90s and from what you said it looks like it would have been easy to deal with - If the person desisted after being arrested. The problem with harrassment (and I dealt with a few and one high profile case) is that some people just don't stop even when brought before the courts. These days I think it's too difficult for many officers to deal with and too much like hard work. I am not saying things were great before 1984 but it did work to an extent back then. The whole world has changed, and nothing for the better.
