@alxgu198 Speed limits do not apply to cycles, it should, but it doesn't. Red lights, pedestrian crossings and one way streets do, but speed - no. I know this because I was a police officer.

@alxgu198 Unfortunately that is not the case.

@DaleSteel It doesn't.

@alxgu198 My employment history was all about the law, and in law cyclists do NOT have to comply with speed limits. That's a fact no matter what YOU think mate.
2
@alxgu198 The point is it isn't the law to know your speed if you are riding a cycle!! It really isn't that hard to understand. Try prosecuting speed in a court. The CPS will crash it and the officer will be laughed at as incompetent and ignorant of the law.
2
@alxgu198 It's not 'up to' the cyclist to know their speed because they don't HAVE TO. As I said how can a speeding cyclist be prosecuted in court when there is no legislation to cover it? Now - think about it.
2
@alxgu198 You people are so dense!! IT IS THE LAW.
2
@DaleSteel You are thinking of Furious Cycling and that has to be very serious indeed to get a prosecution. Speed is not dangerous and speed in itself is not dangerous, as with a car too.
2
@Vince_Paul You totally miss the point. If you are stopped for speeding you are not arrested, so you can say whatever you like to the officer who stops you. You really need to understand what arrest means mate. Could, should might or might not is NOT law. If you have a problem with cyclists riding fast the lobby your MP to change the law, but I can tell you now that nothing will happen. I was driving at 30 mph and a cyclist overtook me safely there would be nothing any officer could have done. Maybe lecture them on road safety but the point would be? You are simply pontificating about what you wish would happen and the days when everyone knew their local Bobby - that time is in the past. You haven't given me the full circumstances when some scooter is taken so I cannot comment. Btw I joined in 1979 and left in 2009. I have no regrets leaving either. I am ashamed of what the police have become.

Petitions written by people who don't know the law. Too many goes at it will allow them to say they are just vexatious.

@CristiNeagu 20mph is far less safe and healthy. There is a reason which affects a person's mental capability when being forced to drive at 20mph with a fine hanging over you. The same happened with the CV.
1
@Vince_Paul Why don’t I check that all cyclists have passed the cycling proficiency test? I am retired mate and checking that would be pointless because no one had to pass one anyway. I really don't know what to say to you if you can't even understand what I have already said. Police CANNOT prosecute someone when there is no statute which covers it. The right and wrings and the morals of it are neither here nor there. Little kids can ride on a road too so what about them then? When do police confiscate scooters? Never heard of it mate. Speeding on its own is not arrestable mate.

@matthewjenkins1161 Exactly. I think I said the same earlier.
1
@alxgu198 'You people' are the one's who just can't seem to grasp English Comprehension or check out the law. It's all on the Internet. Try looking. .

@adenwellsmith6908 No. I am not wrong - you are wrong. There is no law against falling below the standard of a 'competent' cyclist. Ignoring road signs which do not apply to you is not an offence. The RTA 1988 is only applicable to vehicles and drivers on public road Cyclists are not drivers and cycles are not vehicles. Sorry about that.
1
@adenwellsmith6908 Oh for goodness sake!!! A defective vehicle is an offence because a vehicle must be equipt with a speedometer. A cycle is NOT a vehicle and doesn't require one. Well I certainly would not be your witness for sure.
1
@adenwellsmith6908 No it doesn't apply. If you look back at my comments you will see I mentioned Furious cycling earlier, but that is not just speeding alone. It will include other acts and offences which will culminate in order to be prosecutable under that banner. 'Signs' will depend on what signs you are talking about. I have prosecuted some cyclists for red lights, failing to stop at pedestrian crossing and riding down one way streets but most of the stops ended up with warnings. So no, you haven't given three offences, you have merely stated three offences where speed 'could' be a contributory factor.
1
@robertwillis4061 But only if the speed is dangerous due to other factors. I have seen riders going extremely fast on open roads but they certainly were not dangerous, but I get your meaning. Some roads have speed limits which in my view are not warranted, but the local authority use certain criteria to determine them but they are not always right. Sometimes there's a 30 mph restriction but in my view it could easily be 40 mph. It's academic really but low speed limits generate cash and that is the bottom line.

@adenwellsmith6908 Cyclists are some of the worst offenders these days.
