  1. With squatters police have to act swiftly as I did when I was a police officer. I had a call to squatters in a person's house who had moved abroad for a few months. I noticed some broken glass near the lock and a light was on. The man stated they were claiming Squatter's Rights, so I asked him if he was paying the electricity bill. He looked bemused for a few seconds and then said he was going to get it changed over shortly. I informed him that if he didn't leave immediately I was going to arrest him for theft of electricity and gave him 5 minutes to get out. He did and the relative was informed and the place was secured. We called that The Ways and Means Act. Police can (if they have the will) always find a way if it is dealt with immediately and not left.
