I am sure they turn up to shouts in gangs becaue none of them really know what to do when they get thre. Even Skippers and Governors don't seem to have a clue these days. Whistles were worn into the 2000s btw. Didn't use them though.. Walk to a call and people often used to say "Where have you been?" Can't have it both ways.

I joined the Met in 1979 - 2009. Patrolled on foot on my own quite often in th early days, but I will say two officers are much safer than one. I have been in some very sticky situations which became violent very quickly and if I had been on my own I don't know what could have happened. Increasing visibility doesn't help much. It may look good to the public and public relations excercise for the govenors, but they don't have to deal with the results. Not only that for evidence sake, two officers are better than one. Patrolling on your own takes a lot of bottle and you need to be confident in your abilites. Alo the public and victims can benefit from two officer who can get a situation under control quicker and save injuries etc. A few streets apart? On occasions I was on my own in a car covering 30 square miles on night duty with no back-up at all!! Only from the next Division. Not good. I totally agree with the uniform situation these days. Scruffy, leaning against wall, sunglasses, gum, no hats.. God help us
