  2. When I joined the Met police in 1979 we were assigned 'beats' and had to stick to them walking on our own and getting to know the area and the residents. Our presence was a very good deterrent. I have never seen foot patrols since I left in 2009. The main problem I encountered was when someone called they complained how long it took me to respond!!
