That fleet was destined to be all EVs by now and the company has stated that on their website. If it was a diesel then it could well have been a L-ion battery situated elsewhere in the vehicle.

I was a truck and bus diesel mechanic many years ago and I have never seen a transmission fire, let alone one that will burn out the vehicle. Overheated transmission through lack of oil maybe, but that's it. Normally they will seize up, not catch fire. Most vehicle fires are caused by either arson, electrical faults or stupidity. This was probably started by an electrical fault, but white smoke?
