Maybe that's not true for Japanese ladies in their 20s today but most before them, instead of saving for the future, spent their earnings in expensive restaurants, travels overseas etc. Accommodation was provided by the parents, other stuff by their series of boyfriends. And so on. Getting married, even late, was their retirement plan from "fun life". Future husbands, on the other hand, have been expected to prepare from the beginning for the ladies' happiness in terms of personality and finance.
