Confidence is overrated. That is why Silicon Valley investors keep on getting tricked by these supposedly genius start-up personalities, with nothing to show but a grandiose display of confidence. You don't need confidence to do much of anything. You just need competency and willingness to try.

Also, you need to separate out the FEELING of confidence and the DISPLAY of confidence. Usually people who display the most confidence lack inner guidance and confidence, so they over-compensate (think salespeople, guru's, etc). If you watch interviews with billionaire investors and techies, they do not display much outward confidence; many have really awkward habits. HOWEVER, when they dive into their missions and strategies, you KNOW they feel confident in their abilities. How do you decipher fraud vs genuine? Read their minute body language and eye movements.

@patricksullivan1827 Well, having middle managers is already a waste of ... every resource available. If the company is so large, they should make it flat/horizontal with different specializations instead of keep on going up and up with random nodes in between. There are plenty of stories of techies, who transitioned into middle manager roles, complaining that they went from being useful at coding and creating projects to now ... just sitting in on random meetings all day that produce nothing.

I don't mind the hustling; business is business. But you know what grinds my gears? Imagine people claiming to be on great terms with you to influence other people's decisions. They know they never had and never will have strong influence, so they gotta attach your name into the sentences for power boost. Like "bro, use your own ass reputation and leave mine alone. You're tanking my elo and I didn't even queue with you".
