Mindfulness really helps. Don't do things out of habit or ease. Really pay attention. Like don't just go for a walk, but notice the different shapes and colors of things. Maybe as if you're going to photograph or paint them. Don't let the world pass you by in a haze. Never drive so fast that the flowers are just blurs of colors. Idk if yall have read Fahrenheit 451, but people in that dystopia really live life on auto-pilot. It's not a "bad" life per se ... in the sense that they are just numbed by conveniences. Fast cars that go 100+ miles minimum, constant loud shows playing on wall to wall TVs that can converse with you, pills for all your troubles, houses cannot be caught on fire, guaranteed gov-assigned partners, memory erasing, etc. One is not even allowed the company of an unpleasant thought. Who knew having an unpleasant thought is a privilege?

You could feel numb from adaptation to environment. Personal antidote: I was born and raised in a chill seaside town with basically 0 traffic and nightlife. When I lived there, every little thing held significance and beauty (to me). But when I moved to a party city with like 15M population and the people seemingly all have loud personalities and constantly trying to go somewhere fast ... I burnt out by mere existence. My brain adapted by tuning out & dialing down everything. Even then it was struggle bus for me; always on the verge of "1 more honk and I'm gonna be in psychosis". The problem kinda solved itself when I moved to middle of nowhere Maine. Rinse repeat. So it could be that the person didn't bring upon the numbness, but it was just a product of his environment.
