Don't buy this gun. They're terrible and need to be disposed of properly. By me....

Ian, gotta correct you on the whole carry handle myth. It was designed from the beginning as a carry handle. If you look at the ArmaLite X-03 prototype, you will find that it had a carry handle, but no trigger style charger. It was side charging. The X-03 preceded all versions of the AR-10, thus the carry handle was always meant as a carry handle, and only protected the trigger style charger by incidence when it was later added.

What?! No! Uh....I mean...maybe?

+Kyle Goldston true, but that's besides the point. Stoner always liked the idea of a carry handle that was integrated into the rear sight arrangement.

+rangerousdave The only actual reason the military disposed of the carry handle was because it wasn't a very good platform for optics. Too high, not modular enough. Once the picatinny rail was created, there was absolutely no reason to keep the carry handle (although they still made carry handles for pic rails)

+rwsthedemonking It is not "only there" for the sights. It's true that Stoner and Co. were concerned with sight mounting on such a flat receiver, and it's true that the original X-01 prototype only had a flimsy sight tower a la the Johnson LMG, but Stoner thought it'd be a great idea to integrate the sight tower with a carry handle, because he thought it'd be nice for the soldiers to have something close to the balance point of the rifle to grab on and facilitate easy transit. I again point you to the X-03 prototype (before they were renamed to AR-10). Why else would he extend the handle out so far if all he wanted to do was protect the sights? Wouldn't it be smarter to just add some supports for the rear sight to make it sturdy? Unless.... unless you wanted to make the reinforcement of the rear sight double as something else... like a carry handle perhaps? To go one step further, take a look at the X-02. It's an optic-only prototype, as Stoner (like many designers at the time) toyed with the idea of ditching iron sights altogether. And what did he do? He mounted the optic... ON A CARRY HANDLE. (pic if you're still somehow not convinced, X-02 is the middle gun: https://i.imgur.com/KyZWHfz.jpg) The carry handle was always a carry handle. The End.

+William Sager Light as they may be, you've got to consider the balance point of the rifle. It's right at the magwell. If you tried holding the AR-10/M16 with one hand on the handguard, the back end would dip and you'd have to fight that weight. If you hold it on the buttstock or pistol grip, the front end will dip down. Putting a big ol' handle right in the middle makes it exceedingly easy to manipulate the rifle with one hand, say for the purposes of transit. However, being good at one thing isn't enough. The carry handle had plenty of drawbacks. These are all besides my original point.

They made that, y'know. It was for the Finns, but they went with the AK instead. Pic: https://i.imgur.com/ix3MRGa.jpg

+scott dodds I think that has more to do with the inferior production standards surrounding the L85. Those rails were insufficiently secured to the rifle. The ARs have no history of carry handles breaking, and the newer versions have the Pic rails milled into the receiver. On a sidenote, *+Kyle Goldston*, I take issue with the idea that even the takedown pins would be worn to any degree by using the carry handle, given the low weight of the rifle. I mean, it's possible, but strikes me as unlikely. Then again, I'm no curator or expert of field reports on the gun. Perhaps that is something that has happened.

+1423 171 And to think it was made in the late 40s. So strange for the time.

They can use mine if they want

If their currently proposed line ends up selling well, we could see it in the future perhaps.
