Comments by "Dean Schulze" (@deanschulze3129) on "Should the U.S. Still Police the World? with Matt Taibbi, Bret Stephens, Lee Fang \u0026 James Kirchick" video.
Bret Stephens talks about Afghanistan as if there was a sliver lining to it, but ignores that it was a terrible failure of the US policing the world. He also seems to think that the Vietnam War was somehow justified. He invokes Pol Pot in Cambodia? We were never engaged officially in Cambodia, except for a brief period of time. Stephens thinks we should have stayed in Afghanistan and Vietnam. I would like to know how many of the people in Stephens circle of friends and work colleagues have children serving in the military.

@nealorr5086 - But his larger point is that the US pays a disproportionate amount for NATO's defense. Germany, France, The Netherlands, etc. need to pay a fair share.

@samdg1234 - We are talking about the military, not domestic policing. You can be in favor of a policy without being personally involved, but you must be willing to bear part of the burden. Too many people want others to bear the burden while they enjoy the benefits while being insulated from any costs.

I believe that was Eisenhower. What is less known and even more important is that in the same speech Eisenhower warned of the dangers of a technological elite who could manipulate and exert undue influence over the people. That is where the threat comes from today, for example with Google manipulating search results to favor a candidate or a news media that has become a propaganda organ.

@nealorr5086 - Oh, I didn't know I committed a mortal sin by criticizing Saint Brett Stephens. My last statement is a very relevant question. If Stephens, et. al. want the US to police the world they should bear some of the burden. If not themselves their immediate families should be personally involved. James Kirchik invoked World War II as an example of the US policing the world. During WWII we had a universal draft. There was mass volunterism. President Roosevelt's nephew landed in Normandy on D-Day. There were many celebrities like Jimmy Stewart who served in dangerous combat roles. The rich and famous were not insulated from the war. Compare that to today. How many children of the rich and famous serve in the military? How many of Kirchik's children or Stephens children have served? I'm not saying I'm against using the US military to deter war and tragedy. But the burden should be wide spread. Especially to policy makers and pundits.
