This is propaganda and Andy Kunz is spreading conspiracy theories. Street cars are not high speed rail. High speed rail is for long distance travel, not commuting to work from the suburbs. High speed rail competes with air travel for medium and long distances. There is no mention as to how high speed rail would compare to air travel. Freeways aren't the reason why we don't have high speed rail. European countries with high speed rail have freeways too. Germany's autobahn was the motivation for the US interstate system. There was no mention of the losses incurred by passenger rail lines around the world. The last data I've seen showed that there are only 2 profitable commuter rail lines in the world: Paris to Lion and Osaka to Tokyo. The rest require subsidies. They mentioned the Acela line. How much money does the Acela line lose? California is showing what a boondoggle high speed rail is. It's dishonest to ignore the enormous cost overruns. Bakersfiled to Merced? How many people would use it? The private sector initiatives in Texas and Florida are interesting. Let's see how they do. Riding on a train has to be more comfortable than being crammed into an airplane. Maybe they can show California how to do high speed rail.
