  4. Right! 🙄 Well there's a good sized segment of the population who can't feel or doesn't understand the meaning of empathy. They just don't. I'm not saying they're all psychopaths, it's not to that degree, a lot of them are otherwise average people just without the ability (or they choose not to), have compassion for others experiencing misfortune. They just choose not be caring or at least have the impulse to wanting to help people in those situations. It's sad. I'm not saying I can give everybody UBI and a home (altho govt can), but we can all have kindness for those going thru tough times and at least want to see them get the assistance they need (without dehumanizing them in our attitude or treating them like trash).

  5.  @anom3778  just to elaborate, I believe housing must come first, and any substance abuse issues can be addressed after that. Most people do not want to be homeless and being homeless will exacerbate any pre-existing emotional or mental illness issues. Many people use due to past trauma. I would really like you to work on developing more empathy for these people. Everyone can be stabilized with the right amount of help.

  6. Exactly! It's gross. That's the attitude of so many in the public and about 99.9% of the city councils I've come across. In North county and downtown San Diego they've taken to putting decorative boulders along any dirt or grass patch in the city limits known to be a temporary congregating path for the homeless. Really upsets me. I'm considering getting together with other local homeless advocacy groups and suing for a stop to this, and to TRY to work out a simple plan with the asswipes in charge to HELP these people not shit on them.

First of all, I think what so many people fail to grasp, is that most drug users are NOT ADDICTED, it's a myth that every user is an ABuser (of drugs); that's just not the case, but I'll grant some are. And it is true some will commit self-destructive acts in order to feed their addiction, which can cause problems depending on what they are, and that does need to be dealt with if or when that happens, but that DOESN'T mean that its not in ALL of our interest to make drug treatment programs available for all those who want them, and also to ensure that these programs are fairly run and don't insist on total perfection in order to stay in the program. (This last part is important bec I've seen very good people try their best to comply perfectly with all rules of a given program but they are human and they slip up and give in to temptation by using and than once that happens they are often kicked out, losing all the progress they just made. I think that's counterproductive and unfair). Also, it's very unfair and unkind to assume any drug user will automatically cannibalize a residence in order to support their habit. I'm not saying this has never happened, but it's certainly shouldn't be used as an excuse not to provide all possible supportive services including housing to these people. I mean that's just common sense AND compassionate. You can't just write off a whole class of people because you want to ignorantly maintain a belief and moral judgement about them. Everybody deserves a chance to get help with their substance use problem; and even if they blow it or make a mistake, that just means they're human. They should be held accountable, but after that, they should be given another opportunity to move forward. Whether it takes one try or 10 tries, if a person is ready to try to improve their situation, regardless of what it is, they deserve help to do so. None of us are perfect. Any single ONE of us could easily be in that persons shoes we look down on if just one thing had been different in our lives, and that's no bull.

  9.  @hunterpope3369  that's only partially true and it's missing a LOT. I don't have time to go into it all right now but I intend to come back and do so later. In the meantime, you need your understanding of this issue evolved. It's not that simple or black and white. There are many causes of homelessness and once you're in it it's a challenge to move out of it. People do, but they need help to do so; anyone would. YOU WOULD, and don't forget it. And it's a myth that most people are homeless because they are choosing not to work. I'm sure there's a few like that but that's not the majority. You should learn more about this issue from intelligent and progressive sources before making such flip and child-level judgments. There's just more to it and I hope you'll seek out more information on this topic, if not today, then as you get older. And no, there are not always good or livable jobs available, even now. That's a myth that we want to believe but it just not true. There are rarely enough livable single jobs to go around comparable to the numbers seeking employment. I know this from lived experience, but there is data to support this as well.
