Running any kind of rehabilitative program, residential treatment program, or jail on a for profit basis is immoral and should be permanently illegal. Period.

Jesus I just got to the part where it cost her dad 40 Gs. I don't even know what to say. The people who run these places need to be put out of business permanently and criminally charged. All the money that they have ferociously scammed out of families who were naive enough to send their kids there needs to be returned to those families with interest and they need to be awarded copious civil penalties for the poor treatment that these young people were forced to endure while they were there. the fact that lawmakers both local and state level are fully complicit in this, and I find it hard to believe that they don't know how exploitative scamming or illegitimate they are if not outright abusive, is sickening. But I suppose after everything I've heard for the last 25 plus years of my adult life not unsurprising. 😒 Money buys all in the US and it certainly buys a local or state level politico's loyalty, silence, or complicity. It sure would be a utopian miracle to get a few people in public governance or the local police department that have a conscience or even just the tiniest inclination of wanting to do right by people, at least part of the time, if it's easy and doesn't cost them much, but I guess that's too much to ask for in the United States of America.

And also just as a post script, have you and other survivors ever considered suing these immoral organizations because most certainly you and others who have been affected by their predatory behaviors deserve substantial settlements of a minimum of 1 million dollars, I would say. If you don't think you personally deserve that, as you allude to the others who have been more deeply affected by the abuses of these places, I'm sure they certainly do. Either way, you deserve your share.

Thank you so much for sharing a very painful story with us. I know it cannot have been easy. You can see that I'm very moved by your words as I sort of went on a commenting binge here in this section. The podcast INTERCEPTED aired an episode on this very issue a few months back which first opened my eyes to what was going on. Needless to say I was very angry and disturbed by the time I was through listening. If you're interested you can find it in their episode list on any podcast application. I think it would be very helpful for those such as yourself who have survived going through these unethical programs to draft a prototype bill and testify before the CA Congress about your experience, and keep fighting until it is passed. You can see where I commented here that is outrageous that these are both unregulated and be private. It seems to me that 95% of the problems in this sector would not be occurring if these facilities were not privately run. Obviously lack of oversight, whether it's public or private, is going to lead to abuses, but how much more so is that going to occur on a for-profit, private facility?? Beyond anything else, fundamentally these programs should never ever ever be allowed to be done on a for-profit basis. All other regulations and oversights can stem from that. I think the only way to stop this abusive industry from continuing just the same as it always has is to relentlessly hound lawmakers no matter how long it takes into passing ironclad legislation that comprehensively address every single issue that has been brought up tonight, including the outrageous middle of nowhere locations of these places. That, also, should not be allowed, IMO.

@craigbrowning9448 the magic underpants was my favorite part of that religion honestly but I guess it stands to reason that it can't all be epic underwear and smiles behind the scenes unfortunately. Still the epic underwear does sound pretty cool. maybe one day I'll get to see one of these magical Mormon BVDs for myself.

Wonder what her relationship was with her father after all that and what it is today, if she even has one. Maybe he really thought this was something to help her in the long-term, but I have to wonder why he felt it was necessary at all. The ludicrous price tag didn't clue him in that something was wrong here???

in addition to many other desperately needed regulations, NONE of these so-called behavioral treatment centers should EVER be allowed to be placed outside county lines or more than 50 miles from the minors home of record. I think it should be an mmediate red flag if they are located a million miles from nowhere like some Jonestown doomsday-cult prepper hideout. That definitely needs to be ended immediately. It is outrageous that they're so far been able to get away with placing these camps on the dark side of the moon. I can see only one purpose for doing so, and that's to escape any control or oversight by legitimate authorities whatsoever. That must stop. We have more regulations over people getting fishing and drivers licenses than having 24/7 control of youth who have been already identified as as having some sort of special need (permanent or temporary). This video really does get more outrageous the more I hear it. The entities and practices that are regulated in this S-hole banana republic country versus the ones that aren't, are complete opposite from where they should be. I'm not opposed to responsible gun ownership, but getting a dangerous high grade firearm in some states and counties is easier than being able to vote or getting a driver's license. If some people don't think there's something hugely wrong with that then I'd say they're smoking something. Everything is backwards here.

The fact they get public money but are intentionally given no oversight or regulation outrages me. Why do we have such corrupt and harmful people in public office??? Jesus fng crist- why?? We are sending troubled youth and youth in general here and not giving a shit what happens to them as long as the money keeps rolling in. What in the fuck??? If local and state lawmakers don't care, what hope is there for the kids rightly or wrongly swept up into this system??? Clearly the amoral exploiting owners of these places don't care. A few I might believe might just not know any better, esp at some of these religious-based camps, but I believe it's much more intentional than unintentional with the others. I believe it would be naive to believe those in decision-making capacity at these places don't know exactly what they are doing. Oregon and other NW states have been in huge blowback and trouble over this over the past few years. I'm sure it happens elsewhere as well. I believe the drug-treatment/rehab industry has been sadly profitized by these same goons as well. I'm not saying some aren't run by genuine caring people who have a sincere desire to help those who are going through their program, but based on impressions I've gotten, more and more of these rehabs seem to be used in the same manner that these illegitimate youth programs are; to provide faux or inadequate care on a highly-profitized basis. That is really shameful. If a program has outrageous price tag, like some of these rehab centers do, and I don't mean just the luxury ones that are obviously geared towards an elite clientele, that should be the most immediate and reddest of flags. It's a sad day when all of our care programs that could save people's lives or greatly help people who genuinely need it, if done correctly, have been totally co-opted and taken over by these scandalous profit-seeking ghouls that treat providing care the same way they would changing tires or stocking shelves. Makes you wonder if there's any care providers of conscience left anywhere in the country.
