Sitting in the US, after East Palestine, and hundreds of other intentional acts of deep public violence AKA cargo train derailments caused by beyond felonious intentional criminal gross negligence and irresponsible business practices, this hits a lot different for me. I'm of the unreserved opinion that fully nationalized all US cargo rail lines is what we must have NOW. Fucking NOW BETCHES. Anything short of that is an ass r4pe with a blunt object and as such, deeply undesirable. I can't speak to passenger lines in the UK cuz we only have one passenger line and it's private and it sucks but it's still nice enough I guess and it's Amtrak and it's all we got so we.... love it I guess. We have other local rail lines but Amtrak is the only cross-country passenger line. I've used them and they're decent, they just don't travel very fast, I think 60 mph tops, so you're going approximately the same speed as a car. We have a steaming shithole of problems with our freight rail lines however and that's where we need change.

Even under our current govts, which probably won't change foundationally in our lifetimes, nationalization of essential services is always better. Now I can't speak to passenger rail because Amtrak is probably not the greatest example of how to do passenger rail awesomely, but I guess it fulfills the function well enough. Although I imagine if I started scratching that surface I would uncover some unpleasant facts I just don't know enough about it right now to say. What we should always have is nationalized freight rail lines and if you want to see one nightmare dystopian scenario where they're not, just look at the history of the US over the past 150 years, I would say most especially the last 40 with the increasingly irresponsible, abusive, and criminal behavior from the private railroad corporations.
