  13. Thank god that young boy survived. I want justice for him and his family but at 84 I think he'll die soon enough. But I'm sure his family wants to see him get prison. Just no excuse for that. Without a doubt racism and bigotry played a part. I highly highly doubt he would have tried to kill a W person he saw. He saw dark skin and immediately became afraid and interpreted danger. Just sad. Clearly he grew up with bigotry and never got over it.

  22. This is so tragic. He had way too much pain in his life. I truly hope he's at peace now. His birth family sounds like terrible people who abused him and made him feel unloved. He's been in pain a long time. I saw him on TV a few years ago and he looked very ill. He needed help that clearly he wasn't getting. Now his baby will grow up without a father. Very sad all around.

He didn't really give away anything through his body language not that I could see. He'll put in an insurance claim, he'll replace the glass panes that were broken and move on with his life. Edit: I'm not excusing it, I'm just being realistic. Either that, or a demon took him over and merely used him as a physical host to carry out such evil- which can't be proven, even if possible, which I believe it is. But it's impossible to know if that's what happened here, or if this disturbed young man chose this all on his own. Sadly his life is over now too. I'm sure he'll get at least 25-to-life. A heartbreaking tragedy in every way, that's all there is to say. My the victim's family somehow find healing and peace. Perhaps they can start a foundation for other families of murdered youth and heal together.

  70.  @jonghun8468  since they seem to be religious I wonder if their attitude is that their purpose (as given to them by God) is to rescue abused and neglected children and so they foster with the intent to do a permanent adoption, which is admirable, but in this case I guess Lexie had living relatives that wanted her and so they couldn't do that here. I'm making a lot of assumptions of course. So they tried to stave off the return as long as they could I guess. Just my guess. It does seem questionable if they didn't go and visit her when they had the opportunity when they were told they could but that her related family didn't want the cameras. So did they end up never coming to visit her after she was removed and placed with her biological relatives then?

If they truly want to love and adopt a child or children out of foster care that's wonderful, we need more of that, but they shouldn't have tried to force that here, when they were told she had capable family that wanted her. They could have saved their efforts for children who genuinely needed a permanent home. They even got their neighbors involved who I'm sure meant well but didn't have all the facts. That is rather selfish. If you truly love a child you want what is best for them, in this case that would have been reunification with their relatives. Well maybe in the time since the foster family has had time to reflect and realize they were wrong in how they handled this situation. Maybe they learned from this event and haven't done it with any other fosters, if they had any. Well I hope so. But anyhow I'm glad to hear this little girl bounced back quickly and sounds like she's doing fine now.

She's young and healthy or can't you tell? I believe she shortly found another job at a good salary. The only reason employers try to tell employees not to discuss their salary is so that people won't ask for raises. That's wrong and needs to stop. In almost every other developed country at will firing is illegal and employees right to discuss their salary with whoever they choose is protected. So first she was implanted with the surrogate embryo from the other parents, but since she was still ovulating (because she hadn't gotten pregnant naturally so her hormonal cycles hadn't yet changed), then she and her husband conceived after having sex. I wonder if they're going to come out with some guidelines in the future for those planning to be surrogates, to either refrain from sex with their partners or to use birth control in the early stages of the pregnancy with the surrogate embryo- just so there's no confusion later on.

I'm willing to try to give them chances before that point, but if they keep blowing every single one, after multiple chances to change their behavior, then at that point they leave the school no choice and the school would be justified in removing them from the school permanently. There's no justification for initiating bullying. It is never okay to intentionally bully another person, esp with threats of violence. Challenging someone to a fight is one thing, that happens a lot in schools, but if the person chooses not to accept, then the other person needs to let it go. Continuing any bullying past this point is not acceptable.

  142. Wage and salary transparency needs to become the new norm. This isn't proprietary protected information that the company has a right to keep confidential. Everyone has an ethical right to discuss their salary if they so wish and to know the comparable salaries of the other employees in their workplace to know if they're getting cheated or not. Employers just like to cheat their employees and it's just wrong. It needs to become absolutely illegal if it isn't already to fire someone or take any kind of negative response towards an employee that has an open discussion about their current wages and benefits.

  146. Hell yeah. My first call would have been to a labor lawyer. I would have left the money I might front porch and not touched it, called my ex boss let him know this isn't payment and that I was filing a lawsuit for missed wages. I'd tell him he had three days to come pick it up or I would donate it, and continue with my lawsuit. Since there's no proof it came from the boss and since I'm not accepting it as payment, he can't claim the payment is made. So he would have no choice but to pay me properly. I would give him his 3 days, or one day to pick it up depending on what I ended up telling him, and then I really would donate it to a local homeless shelter or charity. Or hell maybe just keep it for myself. Since the ex-boss won't admit he sent it, I have no idea who sent it to me, so accepting it and keeping it or giving it away in no way confirms who gave it to me and in no way counts as my last two weeks' payment. Also without written proof that it came from the boss I don't think he could claim it anyway even if he wanted to. so if you didn't come pick it up I would consider it mine, and legally I would just consider it found money. He would still owe me my last paycheck. If he tried to claim no he sent me the money then where you would have to show proof that that money came from him which at the time he did not it was just a note which could have been written by anybody. So I don't think it would stand up in court if I kept all those pennies and if I continued suing him for my last paycheck in normal form. But I would clear all this with some lawyers before proceeding.

If there's no written proof that those pennies came from the boss, the ex-employee, the recipient of them could just say that he found them on his front porch one day and has no idea where they came from, but since he didn't know who to return them to he just kept them. At that point it seems to me if the boss doesn't sign a legally binding document that he was the one that delivered the pennies, then the ex employee would seem to be justified in demanding his last paycheck still. Only if the boss admits on paper he was the one that sent the pennies then would he not be liable for the final paycheck any longer. Seems like the young man could sue for improper payment form or harassment and I think a judge would be inclined to rule in his favor in a small claims court.

  151. I lost my brother to brain cancer at a very young age. He was six and I was three. Sometimes it's hard to remember him, but I remember being told that one day he had to go away to heaven and see Jesus and that we wouldn't see him for a long time but one day we would see him again. I was so young that I remember not being too sad about it, and believing my parents, but I did miss never seeing him again after that. That was 38 years ago. I can only imagine how far medical technology has come in that time and yet sadly not yet far enough. My deepest condolences go out to this family. I can't imagine the pain of losing a child especially one so young. I know they will carry him in their hearts always. The little sister won't know him but will see pictures of him and wonder what he was like and will think of him from time to time and wish they could have known each other. That's how it was with me.

In this case I really can't blame the family for defending themselves. How did they know he didn't have a weapon? What father wouldn't want to protect his young daughter? Clearly this is not the first time they've seen dangerous or alarming behavior from him. They warned him, they try to get him to stop, as he physically tried to violently break through the door. This is not a person who's thinking clearly. Not sure what condition he's suffering from but I feel very sad that he didn't get help sooner. Hopefully in time the sister will come to realize that the video shows what happened. Hopefully he can rest in peace and can exist on the other side with clarity. Even without a stand your ground law I would have voted not to press charges in this case. Yes they could have called the police, but again if he had had a weapon and wasn't stopped in time the police might have been too late. He doesn't have a weapon, but the family didn't know that. Something clearly was very wrong with him once he started to do property damage to their front door. the father couldn't be certain that he would have been able to stop the young man before he would continue to do any more violence. He chose not to wait to find out, and in this case I can't blame him. I think everyone's very sad about how this turns out most of all the family. I doubt they wanted to see him dead they just wanted him to leave them alone and get the help he needed. Mental illness is always very sad. I highly doubt he had an evil heart but I think it's clear he had an unwell mind.

Force them to work to pay it back plus six mos jail time. No need to go overboard, that just keeps people enslaved into the prison system and doesn't fix the original problem. At least they didn't get violent. That's a big deal to me. If they did, I would be more upset and want a harsher punishment. Since they didn't, I'm willing to treat it as a minor theft and punish it accordingly. 3-6 months jail, pay it back, and an apology. I think that's fair.

On one hand we need a child services department to intervene on behalf of abused youth, on the other hand how can we be sure that they're not taking kids away from homes where they're loved and being treated well even if the parents don't have a lot, but they're doing their best? I do think some CPS agents either don't know what they're doing, make mistakes out of ignorance, get overzealous, or in some cases actively don't have very good intentions. Some of these stories below can attest to that. I've also heard a lot of secondhand accounts about when CPS wrongfully intervened where they didn't need to or caused more harm by placing a child into another harmful or abusive home. I don't know exactly how to fix this it's very frustrating because I feel helpless when I hear these stories. how can we save children by taking them away from homes where they're being abused and neglected and placing them into temporary foster homes where they're abused or neglected? How do we ensure that every Foster family is good and moral and upstanding and knows how to look after children? If the system is bad right now, how do we fix it so we minimize the chances of these things happening? Those who have been through the system would be the best persons to consult on this subject.

Companies have no ethical reason for trying to prevent employees from discussing their own personal business with each other when it comes to their salary. Companies just don't want to pay any more than they have to and if employees discover they're being underpaid obviously they're going to want that rectified, as they rightly should. If companies paid fairly to start with then they won't have anything to fear about other employees learning how their pay stacks up against others in their workplace. This is also why I believe we need published, set salaries and benefits for the same position and/or the same amount of experience and education. We need a more specific updated wage and salary transparency law which would protect employees from any retaliatory efforts legal or otherwise from companies due to communications about wages.

Thank goodness I was able to ride the local city bus around until it went out of service, then I waited one very cold 30 min until the light rail line started and I rode it for the next 2-3 hours. Thank you to Portland transit system for not having transit ticket checkers Bec I didn't have a ticket. I was able to stay warm and sleep thanks to public transit. We're it not for them I don't what I would have done.

With enough intervention and counseling she can probably be fine. and stop letting the parents off the hook. My heart breaks for the father but he and the baby's mother should NEVER have left their child in the care of another very young child who they knew had a history of emotional problems. My heart goes out to this man clearly he has a conscience and he's been haunted by this incident ever since. I praise him for for coming forward finally. I believe he should get a chance to walk free again, although that really should be up to the victim's family in all fairness. Perhaps he himself never intended to kill the young man and those other two crazies he was with were the ones that killed him. He just didn't come forward with the knowledge. In that case he's not guilty of murder at all but he is guilty of concealing the fact that a murder occurred. Robbery is a crappy thing to do to someone but it's a relatively minor crime when no violence occurs. He might have intended only to rob him, but the other two wackos he was with decided to take it much further. I don't know if that's exactly what happened, but it wouldn't be the first time, if it did. It takes a lot of courage to finally come forward. He could have continued to keep the secret, but he didn't knowing that he would potentially be put away for life. I hope the courts showed mercy on this man. It looks like his life hasn't been a very good one since this incident.
