Unfortunately when you get this type of intentional divestment and essentially looting by oligarchs and/or well-connected behind the scenes interests, sadly this is what happens.
When two-thirds or four-fifths of the population are considered extraneous or unworthy or unnecessary by those public roles, these are the inevitable results.
I'm on the far left because no other value system actually works, if by working one means "care for everyone".
At least SOME control of big business and downward redistribution through fair taxation, is necessary, or more and more money is hollowed out of our communities and flows upward and ends up in fewer and fewer hands, either inside or out of the country. We are seeing results of decades of this shitty neoliberal con game both within the US and the UK right now.
In addition, central government funding is very important. But since everyone outside of a far leftist doesn't give a flying fuck about the vast majority of the populace, then when all of these non-Left persons are in charge they aren't going to maintain or increase funding to necessary public needs. As it is with our two bought-and-paid-for corporate right-wing parties in the us, the GOP and the Democrats, they really don't care if the anyone in the public lives or dies. They're not here for us, they don't see themselves as public servants, they find that to be a joke (GOP esp). They are out here to get rich by serving the big money, which means very wealthy individuals and big business. Here in the US, being a loyal servant and protector of big money interests will provide you a fabulous lifestyle both while in office and definitely beyond. If you only care about yourself it's a perfect career choice.
At the state and federal level in the US has been virtually impossible to elect even pretend left candidates much less actual. We have no left party here outside of fringe associations that unfortunately they so far are not organized enough to even break into big city politics much less state level. I'm sure they're trying though it's just that for whatever reason, if they do field candidates the voters don't choose them. Well I chalk this up mostly to billionaire owned media. Outsider candidates are rarely if ever given any time on MSM. The pathetic duopoly (GOP/Dems) are very proficient at making it next to impossible for any challenger parties or candidates to mount a successful campaign.
Electoral politics is completely controlled by a very smart web of interlocking Big Money interests; the problem lies in that average and poor people continue to vote for the same assholes who serve them, which I can only assume means they don't want better for themselves or anyone else.
Here in the US we do have public ballot measures at the local and state level. All matters imo should be going to a public referendum on a regular schedule but that isn't a reality yet, but at least there are various public voting cycles where we can make our views heard directly. Unfortunately we have a lot of shameless politicians that really don't give a fuck, even when the public votes strongly in favor or against something they will use whatever methods they can to do an end run around or subvert it. This can happen on a local or a state level. Yeah a lot of them are pretty shameless; they refuse to give up pushing their own agenda even when the public voice is strong on a particular issue.
So the 99%'s enemy is and has always been various unfeeling lowlife political types, and elite level greed, but beyond that, a public that continues to choose these interests knowingly or unknowingly.
Knowing this, it's frustrating and difficult to try to imagine an effective strategy to rest power away from these interests and back in the direction which would serve the dirty hoi polloi and not narrow elites. This is the difficulty all those on the Left who have political opinions always face. The wider public, while full of mostly good-hearted people who are probably smart enough in other ways, collectively seem to be quite politically stupid and consistently are willingly bamboozled by elite-driven political figures. When Left candidates stand up and preach prosperity for all and justice for all they get ridiculed. Ok then.... It's the same conundrum here in the US and I'm not sure if it has any easy answers. If enough voters don't want to choose unapologetically or militantly Left candidates then..... Nothing I guess?? More status quo? For now I suppose so. Maybe those on or near the bottom that are struggling so hard feel that there's nobility in suffering and poverty. That's certainly what religion teaches.
You see, there's more than enough to go around but it can't constantly keep being siphoned off by sociopathic elites or wasted. Poverty and malaise are COMPLETELY fixable but only if a given govt group wants to do so; wants to make life better for everyone. Short of that, there will always be a chunk of the population seen as expendable and left to die. The specific details can and will vary, but it's the same broad dynamic everywhere.
There's more than enough for everyone to be at least comfortable but ONLY if government bodies are willing to apply more control to the business sector via sufficient regulation; apply tax at the top, NOT the middle or bottom, and chooses to fund public needs and wants PROPERLY. Also strong Labor laws is a MUST. Piss-poor wages/benefits and no employee rights (ie family leave, layoff protections, sick days, union empowerment) should not be acceptable. These are gross values passed down by a cruel and exploiting super elite that wanted to use workers as pseudoslaves (or actual slaves in some cases). It's sad that in the 21st century we still have to battle this kind of thinking.
Regardless of what class one is born into, EVERYONE has the right to seek and desire a reasonable quality of life. Without the right people in government I just don't see how this can happen for everyone tho. If it could have done so on its own it would have happened by now. It's true, sometimes government can easily go too far and can do the wrong things and can overreach but that's what public discourse is for. The moment government forces do go too far, that's where an empowered public and a vibrant press should immediately push back on.
In short, ALL poverty and lack is fixable. It would be done so tomorrow if those in certain public decision-making roles wanted to do so. Clearly they do not. I would like to fix this but for some reason way too much of the public doesn't want to embrace a more empowered and comfortable lifestyle. Propaganda is a big reason for this, perhaps also religious conditioning. I'm not yet exactly sure how to negotiate this phenomena. That's where I'm at now in my political development; how exactly to chart a path forward for Left idealists who demand at least some public role... And I'm honestly not sure yet.
