THIS! SHOULD ABSOLUTELY BE ILLEGAL.

I don't understand why poor credit or no credit is being used as an exclusionary measure. It makes no sense to me. It's asinine and it's just an excuse to deny someone an apartment for no moral reason. Should be illegal. Why do only people with good credit deserve apartments? You have stable living and employment history that's all that matters. Just because you didn't pay a loan or you don't have a history of loans (which actually is a good thing; that should be a character plus not a flaw but we live in backward unethical times), what does that have to do with you being responsible about your rent? They are not in any way intimately connected.

Security deposit is fair I don't know about non-refundable pet deposit. Should be refundable.

Every human being alive needs a place to stay and an income. Why do you feel the need to discriminate!?! You definitely would get disqualified for being a hateful loser. When corporations and landlords are the reason for such greed and you blame the poorest of the poor, migrants, I mean that just tells me that there is nothing between your ears at all other than ignorance and hate. Shame on you.

Back then: discrimination for race creed color sometimes gender but SO aFfOrDabLe! Today: must make 50K a month for a 4K microstudio (But no discrimination!) Honestly good lord I don't know which I'd prefer but I know I'm being screwed right now in every orifice and I gotta tell ya- I'm about done with it

At this rate we will have 100% homelessness within five years. Make that three. If we try really really hard we could probably get it there by tomorrow.

Drugs shouldn't matter but obviously sex crimes are a problem. No one is saying landlords shouldn't have any power but mostly corporations are taking it to such an extreme they're driving homelessness and tenant abuse like never before.

Creditworthiness or loanworthiness has absolutely zero to do with one's reliability at paying rent. Without extremely stricter regulations on the rental sector, these abuses will keep happening. It's extreme bullshit.

Wow that's crazy. I've heard of crazy shit like this happening overseas and I'm sure plenty of this kind of nonsense happens here in the US as well. I don't know what was going on with the landlord or leasing company but they were definitely trying to screw you guys around. They were definitely unethical and shady AF. Really glad it finally worked out for you and shame on those assholes. I hope they go bankrupt.

Next time tell them you'll sue. This is a massively criminal scam that so many landlords try to get away with. They're betting you won't take them to court. If it's within 3 years you can still sue them for your deposit. Tell the judge exactly what you just told us, that you left the apartment in reasonable condition. LLs think they shouldn't have to pay a penny towards their business. They always try to offload it on the tenant because they're amoral greed-demons and criminals who should be locked up. Don't let them victimize you. Deposit stealing is rife within the landlord industry because renters don't stand up for themselves. That doesn't have to be you. This is what the courts are for. Try it- you have nothing to lose.
