@Jacosmi yeah the ivies don't really bother me, they originated for the east coast elite and naturally that's who they will cater to. It's just one of those things that I don't see changing any time soon.
What is wrong to me is the fact that public institutions are increasingly costly forcing many students to take out predatory student loans. This is really bogus and needs to be changed yesterday. For us average slobs, a State U should always be affordable or even free.... but at least affordable. For those with bougier tastes, they know where to go. I would love a 4 yr degree and I can still get there with some extra work, but it does suck that at the time of my HS graduation (2000) my parents couldn't afford to help me so my options for college were few. I was a decent student but not a spectacular one so I knew I wouldn't qualify for many scholarships (and an athlete I was not lol). I did start at the 2-year level, didn't stay tho I should have, and ended up going sideways into the Navy bec it seemed like a fair opportunity for some skills training. It was to a point and they do provide some decent financial aid for college if you choose it, plus officer programs if you're interested. (I applied twice, tho I had high marks in all areas, positive recommended, and was from a desirable demo and specialty, I was denied. They never tell you why. To this day it's a mystery. Second time I couldn't manage the required number of female pullups so on that one technicality I was out, tho on every other metric I was strong. Perhaps if I had appealed to someone higher up they could have granted me a pass, but I didn't. I probably didn't want it bad enough so I just accepted it).
I still have the educational benefit available and I hope to use it soon.
So long as you don't choose the front line (and please don't anyone, none of our conflicts are moral), some time in the armed services may be beneficial. Outside of the front it's like any other job, tho sometimes more stressful.
However, how much easier would it be for everyone from the bottom 60% if State schools were just cheap? At least community colleges are still semi-reasonable, tho you would still need a plan for your last two years, plus any masters or PhD programs you wanted.
Your program sounds awesome by the way. If you ever feel like being more specific let me know because now I'm curious. I think it's amazing that school is paying you well. I wish that was the standard. Do you feel comfortable saying what school you're working at? There have been a lot of strikes lately especially at UC schools here in California because of the pretty terrible pay and treatment of lower-level professorial staff and PhD students and service staff.
I'm not sure as to their latest status but I'd def like to know.
