@chocomalk well if it is being mismanaged I'm very sorry to hear that but man all I can tell you is private healthcare ain't no panacea. For those of means who want to pay more, in some cases much more, for healthcare they feel they can trust that's fine, but if you're lower-income or no-income what are you supposed to do? There should be robust public healthcare available for everyone as well as private healthcare for those who want it and can afford it.
Once you turn healthcare over to the profit motive things can go downhill fast. I won't say it's always bad but it can get bad quickly. High premiums, getting denied services you desperately need that you were supposed to be covered for, $1000 ambulance rides, unaffordable medication. It's a real mess here for a lot of people. I think it's something like 100,000 people here die every year for lack of healthcare access, millions more struggle to afford their prescriptions and so on. Essential medications are being priced out of reach on purpose by these hyper greedy Pharma Bros. I think if you knew the extent of it you'd be pretty shocked.
It can be a mess. Like I said some people who can afford it might be really happy with their private health provider here in the States and I'm happy for them, but you're just as likely to hear horror stories from people who basically were taken for a ride from their pricey health insurer. There is a patchwork of some forms of state health coverage plus Obamacare but both of those programs have a lot of issues and leave a lot of those who need them unable to qualify. Also I forgot to mention, medical bankruptcy is I think the first or second leading cause of bankruptcy in the US. I think the leading cause of debt overall is student loan debt followed by general credit card debt.
We're kind of a worst-case scenario for a lot of things but my point is, a totally unregulated free-for-all for-profit healthcare system can cause a lot of harm. Now if it was more regulated a lot of those harms would be prevented or at least minimized.
I thought that private healthcare was available in Canada?
