Non-competes never should have been legal. I could see them applying while a person is employed at a company but definitely not if they are laid off, leave of their own accord or fired. If you're no longer working that company nobody has the right to tell you where you can and can't work, that's outrageous. You are not their property! I'm shocked any company got away with it until now. There's no way in hell I would have complied with that I don't care what I signed. Let them come after me. I'll see you in court! To think that people think they can tell you where you have the right to work after you are no longer in any way tied to them is insane. But there's all kinds of scammy and scummy behavior that goes on today. People will push as far as they can get away with, always, that's definitely a truism of life.

@Jimraynor45 oh please. People are pressured to sign or misled about what they are signing. It's just like mostly corporate landlords driving up the cost of rent and then acting like people have options, when the rent isn't any lower within a 50-mile radius. You're trying to justify the non-justifiable. NCs were never okay. Just more scummy and shady behavior that companies loved to pull because they knew they could get away with it because they have protection organizations called lobbyist groups that buy politicians. If you think people should be treated like property, you got a problem. Nobody has the right to take my freedom of choice away I don't care who they think they are. You don't own me and I'll see you in court if you think otherwise. A contract is only valid if it is ethical and fair to both parties and done without any duress whatsoever explicit or implicit. Lol take that hot mess somewhere else. You just don't respect workers. Curious what you do for a living.
