Until workers aren't seen as easily expendable poker chip pieces to be discarded as necessary - and it will take better labor laws to get that- yeah it will keep happening. Until this shit is regulated away, these guys will help themselves to every cookie in the jar. No one else matters.

Yeah he did. I remember reading some bogus business success book a long ways back where he very openly defended it. Even at the age I was when I read it, long before I ever had any awareness of labor issues or had political views, I knew something didn't sound right about it. All we need is a few laws on the books intended to prevent mass layoffs in all but the most severe conditions- which recognize the dignity and rights of all workers, and that reiterate that workers are in fact human beings, not simply smart drones, and their stability and income matters at least as much if not more so than CEO and shareholder profit, especially when profits are already well beyond projections.

Layoffs can cause a lot of harm. I've had friends that have had their lives turned upside down by them. They came out okay eventually, but took 1-4 years to completely get back on track on average. I'm willing to bet the large majority of layoffs in the US are not really necessary, that a workable alternative could be found if the ownership or management really wished to.

All workers in companies over a certain size, say 50-100 people, deserve profit share dividends. I have talked about this elsewhere on MPU and left boards. I didn't know this has been done before at times, that's nice to see. It needs to be demanded as mandatory in part of a suite of much better Labor laws that we need, but don't yet have.

It's probably been longer than that in some cases and then theres my case, which is kind of unique which I don't count as a layoff as part of mass layoffs, but it was a layoff/letting go over a fairly unfair issue which set off a long chain of bizarre setbacks for me.

@gwynbleidd1917 oh I no I get it. The mindless drive for ever-higher profits spares no one. At a minimum we need this firmly regulated against. I haven't had a chance to read anything by these two yet but I look forward to sitting down and doing so. I've been on the left for quite a while now.

@nickthompson1812 I'm not against the for-profit business - but it can't be profits at all costs. I have a list of defined limits that protects workers, communities, customers, suppliers, the environment AND other businesses from monopolistic or unfair practices. To me it's simple. Business should benefit everyone. If it's not- then something's wrong. Regulatory law is necessary to set the right rules and guidelines on the private sector. Clearly the big firms won't apply it by themselves.

@JohnT.4321 that is true - there's no guarantee they won't be weakened in the future, there is the risk of that under our current system, but we need to start there, and hopefully we can use these hopefully much-better laws as stepping stones to push for broader change down the road. Also, I'm way on board with the need to push for freight rail nationalization. It's really pathetic that's it's been privatized all these years.

@nunyabidness3075 I disagree. Fair and rational regulation prevents misconduct and unfair practices by employers, esp in big business, or at least makes it less likely it will occur.

@nunyabidness3075 well I agree but I'm not proposing that people can't quit. Anyone can always quit. I just think there should be legal limitations on when someone can be fired or laid off without fair cause, and cause should probably be more fully defined. I also want a guaranteed severance package for anyone let go due to no personal fault, proportional to their time with the company. I want to hear everything small business owners have to say, these standards are mostly to control big business. Smaller businesses usually aren't the problem.

@nunyabidness3075 it's not that I don't understand what you're saying I believe I do I'm just saying that at the end of the day we can't let these people basically dictate policy. Of course I want to do everything I can to empower small and regional businesses, they're the ones that are most frequently getting screwed by the greed and misconduct of the large corporate class. It is corporations that have gotten out of hand. My vision is to to put limits around the big business class and to enforce fair business practices, by any means necessary. I don't believe business should be seen as the enemy- it should be seen as something that benefits everyone- but it won't if the State doesn't enforce this kind of conduct from Big Business. Also there are times when smaller businesses can be just as guilty of misconduct. I mean we could demand and create much stronger labor laws in this country. I have a full list of changes in labor law that I want to see. We can encourage other countries' governments to protect their low-wage workers by setting a strong minimum wage for that country. It would be great if we could get a global movement going which seeks to establish a global minimum wage. If big companies want to play the capital flight game, they should find their options limited. I'm not saying they can't seek to make a profit, but it should be only after these other requirements are met.

@danf4447 it can and that needs attention under the law. I am researching currently to find out if I can legally bring a very serious civil lawsuit against a city that did exactly that to my father 30 years ago - and it caused a lot of strain and a long cascade of problems in our family. However, my parents did not sue at the time, which they certainly should have, no two ways about it. This is still something we have never really talked about. I still don't know why they didn't fight it. He was cheated out of a very good job AND his unemployment compensation at the time. He should have sued for wrongful termination, but for some reason did not. If there's any legal way for me to get his long-denied compensation and wrongful termination awarded, inflation-adjusted for the present, I'm going to try. My intent is to split it equally with my parents who are still alive. Split, bec some long family issues they owe me for, and because it affected my future at the time too. But even if I didn't see a dime, I would pursue this. It was a completely unethical thing to do to someone and unless there's something huge I don't know, totally unjustified. I want this made right. Stronger UI laws are needed in cases of quitting and firing too and I'll defend this from any opposition. Not all firings are justified and many quittings are essentially forced. Then again, standard UBI would serve this purpose and not be dependent on one's qualified job loss reason or job status. If you're under a baseline income for any reason, you get it. End of fucking story. Or we could just do both. Fair UBI, and fair UI. You get to keep whichever is higher.

I have a basic strategy that goes a little something like, unite the left and other compatible outsider parties, as you allude, compose EVERY piece of legislation and reform we want to see, from A to Z, draw everything up in full detail; this will be a long process of collaboration and back and forth and adjustment, once it's done get it printed and have on hand for reference, Then, start organizing for more ballot measures in CA, where I live and bec it's the most populous, organize to win seats on county boards in populous counties, which will be hard to do as outsiders, and just go from there. I recommend a county by county methodical approach. Far more effective than shooting for the state House where we will be far outnumbered even if we managed to get in. Pushing for more ballot measure access and frequency puts policy power more in the hands of the people and sidesteps the big money-owned state legislature. Not sure if that change would have to come from inside the legislature which is a bit of a Catch-22, but one that eventually be overcome I'm sure.

@jjoohhhnn I agree. I think the division on the so-called cultural issues is far less than assumed and we should be almost identically arranged when it comes to economic issues. I think the principles of a more ideal society are something that the large majority of people will agree on, I believe that the Left (the real Left) stands for all of these principles, and that would just need to get a lot more organized and do a lot better job with our messaging and our outreach to other groups that have so far been put off considering the Left, even the liberal fake left, due to misinformation and right-wing propaganda. I mean look almost any normal person would agree that an ideal society does the following: -makes a sincere attempt to provide justice for all -provides economic security and stability for ALL -doesn't tolerate bigotry -helps outsiders -provides the maximum amount of civil freedom that doesn't compromise others' safety Yeah I mean I'm with you. Most voting people and the voting-curious shall we say, agree on most of the basic things they just don't KNOW that they agree on them or they don't know how to put into words what they want a particular movement or politician to say or to stand for. It's too bad we don't yet have a viable cohesive Left party right now that was capable of showing everyone why THEY'RE the party they've been looking for.

@jjoohhhnn all that information is gold, the first off I just want to agree with you that it is a 100% insane how at least some people or more accurately, the intent to rile up some people through stupid reactionary issues, continues to push the obsession with trans or gay people or gay sex. And of course this abortion issue now is back in everyone's face, as if the interests behind taking away one of women's most fundamental healthcare rights gives a flying shit about fetal life or any other life for that matter. People's private sex-related decisions are a major obsession for the curiously freedom-obsessed Right. Very interesting that one. I guess it's only their freedom to discriminate or their own freedoms they're too concerned about. Why is this such a bone of contention for some of these people?? What other consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home, whether YOU think it's gross or not, is no concern of yours. I mean this is kind of a basic statement of fact. The fact that people couldn't even be gay in public, or in bars, for so long without the threat of violence either from the Pigs or from some random reactionary, is just gross. The fact consenting sex work among adults is still criminalized I find completely unacceptable. Emphasis of course, on the words consenting and adult. It is no business of the State what I do with my body if I freely choose to do it! Good god, such a 1984 country. I find it appalling that any person in this country would dare to think they have a right to control the private lives of another consenting adult, whether or not sex or sexual choices are involved. We have a lot of bizarre sexual fascists in this country, and just fascists period. I don't think they're anywhere near the majority but I do think some of them are a very vocal minority. Gay people had to endure violence throughout the 60s and 70s because of these pieces of shit, mostly the cops, and now millions of women from coast to coast are finding a fundamental right to control their own bodies and futures ripped away, which is vile. And it's not that I don't think that later turned fetal life is precious, I very much do, but I don't put the fetus, or the blastocyst for that matter, before the life of the woman who is carrying it. I think it's very unjust for anyone to do so. Trans athletes are getting maligned, which is an issue I hope people get tired of soon because it's all much ado about nothing. There is a very appalling desire from the fascists in this country to completely control other people and their private non-violent choices. Consenting drug use and drug trade amongst adults is the single biggest reason PD's and mass incarceration exists. Now they're attacking kratom, a wonderful natural substance, out of ignorance and malice. Freedom of choice regarding health and food have been under attack for quite some time. These fascists just don't think anybody should have the right to choose or think anything for themselves. And they call themselves defenders of freedom??? Freedom for who? Freedom to do what? Yeah we have a hell of a fight ahead of us. The ignorant fascists who have connections to public office or deep pockets are well-organized. @nunyabidness3075 so what do you suggest? We leave the economy in the hands of the big corporations? Let them be the kings? How's that been working out for a lot of people so far? No, they're not going to be at the top. Until they're forced to follow more stringent requirements that protect those interests I stated, we will have a problem. I'm not in favor of a big tyrannical government, but it's not tyranny to properly control big business. Either the State enforces fair business practices, or the corporations run the show. And when the corporations run the show, most people lose.
