Glad to see there are some free-thinking Brits out there. It is quite odd to continue this ancient belief system in the modern age. I understand the desire to maintain one's traditions but there are practical issues. For a figurehead, they sure are expensive. People like to pretend they're more special than others and other people go along with it because it makes them feel special to participate. That's all it is. These people are no different than you or me. They just live a WHOLE lot better. Believe what you want but just remember a) we can't prove god exists so it's pointless to base any public philosophy on any personal beliefs, there should always be a firm separation between church and State, and b) these people are NO different than anyone else. They seem different because they're treated different, that's all. By all means enjoy your cultural traditions but it's the 21st century. You shouldn't be buying into these as anything more than a national tradition. Im from the US but even if I lived there I'd feel the same. These are ORDINARY PEOPLE who were accidentally born into an unusual family who once upon a time declared themselves better than everyone else 1000 years ago, or maybe they were selected by local population, who knows, it's probably been lost to history, but from then on treated as if they were intrinsically extraordinary - which they AREN'T. God doesn't choose our so-called political leaders - WE DO. (Actually in the US, corporations and billionaires do, but that's a separate discussion) There may well be a Higher Power out there but do I think it "picks" countries' governments or other "significant" people specifically? No way in heck. But whatever it's your life you can believe whatever you want I just think it's damn weird people still believe this sh*t.
