@ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt Im down with Russia but it's ok if you're not. Western MSM propaganda is everywhere. I'm on the far Left, so I stand apart from all that.
In fact, you must look what Rosatom is doing. Are you aware of them? Incredible work! I didn't know who they were until last week. Now I'm blown away.
Yes Yucca Mountain! I remember that too. I live here in CA. So silly. That is an ideal location. Unless it's on a reservation, there is no good reason not to proceed that I'm aware of. I don't know how to prove to people that it is safe other than to constantly repeat the facts.
They recently decommissioned San Onofre. I don't know why and I've been too busy to look it up. Do you know? Seems foolish and unnecessary.
This is one area where the public just doesn't understand the facts. I'm not pulling this out of my ass, I've done a lot of lay research. Plants are safe and worth it. Storage casks are safe!!! They are nearly indestructible. I've seen the test footage. Much more so than people realize.
There are even deeper earth repositories to be found than Yucca Mountain. I am sure somewhere in the US we can find a suitable location. Apparently there are several being debated in Canada.
Carter meant well I'm sure but was mistaken. We should start full reprocessing of all fuel stores now.
I'm all for omni-rule, but this is one area that people are just getting wrong, but it just stems from misinformation. Hopefully people will come to realize in time that every nuke plant is not Chernobyl, and safe storage can be achieved.
Nuclear energy is the future and it is far safer overall than any other fuel source. Between reprocessing and deep earth storage, waste is a mostly a non-issue.
Initial costs are high, but so what?? Government funding should and can be given to help offset those. Whatever it costs the point is, it's worth it. Once up and running, plants can last for 50-100 years if properly managed. Nothing is free to start - costs are always high at first, then over time costs drift down. It's the same with any large infrastructure.
All renewables are valuable and important, but clean nuclear can run 24/7 and isn't dependant on battery storage. Plus it uses cool science and provides good jobs, lol.

@ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt oh snap. Well thanks for going on ahead. I trained on a fun sub in Charleston SC in '99 that they retrofitted for training. Closest I ever got to a sub after that lol. But they are neat machines, I was fascinated by their systems, and the guys from the sub fleet always seemed like very good guys. I was on the opposite - two carriers. One old, the cvn65, and one brand new, the cvn76. In your day the Enterprise wasn't all that old, but by mine it was a trip. Lots of issues, but it was ok. It had a lot of character - that's what I liked about it, even if the plant layout was complex and the age was causing a lot to go wrong.
They should have turned it into a museum after its decom in '13, but they didn't, to my knowledge, which was just wrong. It was a unique bird, and deffo should be preserved.
Carriers seem huge at first but after a while they start to feel not all that big. You get used to moving around it quickly.
I've often thought how I might enjoy the intimate feel of a small craft. I might have like them a bit better, but never got to find out, heh.
