When I lived in Kyiv I met a man named Italia who was a safety inspector at Chernobyl who was not there during the explosion but on vacation he explained that the reactor is in all intents and purposes a fast breeder reactor which can either make weapons-grade plutonium or electricity but it is unable to do them both at the same time and it was an experiment to make it do both at the same time that caused the plant to explode.
