As a commenter I started to notice something was wrong after the first week of October. I learned a lot since, about who and what effects the visibility of your comments. I am still not sure what the intent on YouTube's part is, if any. It seems their only intent is to moderate, as in dull down, not rock the boat, prevent anyone from being triggered to engage in anything, raise any kind of controversy.
The channel owner can set some parameters that determine how bad it gets. He can also personally hide messages but I don't believe this to happen a lot on the bigger channels, this requires a lot of attention and work.
First you feel someone is suppressing you particularly or your view particularly. But people on both sides of the spectrum are complaining. It appeared to me that on the bad channels, any message with a somewhat negative feel to it is hidden or deleted, not just those with particular words in it. And I am convinced it is all AI based, no one at Google knows exactly what is happening.
Things that matter in addition to message content are probably your personal comment history and your profile. Once you got suppressed it becomes very hard to get anything in on that particular video's comment section.
And... this is bad. It creates silos of people agreeing with each other.
