I don't see why we should be shocked about this movement. How is this any more weird or stupid than believing in God, the creator of all? The latter group is more plentiful still, they have been among us since the beginning of mankind and are likely not going away any time soon. And this believe is not limited to western culture. To believe in something that sets you apart from "the others" is apparently appealing. It could be a tribal urge, a social thing. Most of us want to identify ourselves as something. We do not like to be alone. Alone is weird, lost, not normal. The base for the binding is secondary.
