  11. I am Dutch, I've seen Geert Wilders operate in parliament for over 20 years. It is bad enough that he won this big, he has some weird political fetishes, but I would not call him a fascist. He originates from the VVD, a moderate right wing party, in which he clashed with party leadership about his Islamophobia. So he started his own party, which is really just him. As a leftist, I say he is not your regular trumpian idiot. We have seen worse in Dutch politics. For an anti-immigration islamophobe who does not want to spend money to counter climate change he is actually quite sane and on social economic issues he could even be regarded moderately left wing. I am not worried he will kill democracy anytime soon. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what parties he will end up in a government with, if even that. It is still possible to form a government without him although that seems unlikely and not true to the outcome of the election.

  13. I visit a market each week. I used to buy my greens from a stand there. One week I didn't need any so I just passed the stand. The guy behind it started shouting profanities at me. I guess he felt entitled to my business. Other people laughed awkwardly in vicarious embarrassment. The weeks thereafter fewer and fewer people stopped at the stand. Everyone went to the competitor instead. The guy continued to yell at people passing his stand until he was no longer there. There's another man in his spot now who just smiles and nods at people. We still talk about the other guy. Rumor has it he's in an asylum now.

I remember some 40 years ago there was a show on TV in which they played a court case against Oswald with a real attorney and a real prosecutor and real expert witnesses. The outcome bared no weight because it was not a real court but it was very enlightening. It was basically proven Oswald could not have done it. If it were (one Russian general is unmotivated), it would be pretty stupid to go public with that information because as Russia's opponent you would want him to stay in that position. It may be standard procedure as a means of archiving for the very purpose of making it possible to find out what the government has been doing. Transparency and all. Our prime minister deleted some of his SMS messages and got quite a bit of backlash about it because he is not supposed to do that, it is considered highly suspicious. Parliament needs access to all communications to be able to do its job.

Second, they regard this as a valuable source they want to keep access to (remain friends with) so they will not be too critical and let the source cast its propaganda so they can have them back to fill another slot. Some of them just want to burn it down so it won't work for anyone anymore. Understood. Others of them are stupid enough to believe that swapping out the current government with republicans would make their lives better somehow rather than worse. And then there were those who did see the signs but figured they could sit it out and "conservative values" were important to uphold. You've seen that all at work in 2016. Since, more and more people have snapped out of it and republicans have suffered loss after loss. I don't see many people go "with what I know now compared to what I knew in 2016, let's give those republicans another shot". Nor are new and younger voters leaning republican, they are leaning democrat. So it doesn't make sense. Alright, first time voters may still have to register (this was among registered voters), the democratic campaign hasn't started yet and all the attention went to republicans over the last couple of weeks. But even then it doesn't add up. And I am more of a cat person anyway.

It is still guessing, we don't know how it works exactly. Perhaps no one knows and there is a machine learning component to it. This should be transparent though. I am pretty sure it will be optimized for views and engagement but the net effect seems to be it favors the average opinion. And it reinforces silos. I would rather argue with people I do not agree with than with people I do agree with, the latter is a waste of time. It also occurred to me that liking videos probably makes this worse. Apart from me being utterly f-ed once the fascist lot rises to power, my upvote probably only increases the chances of the video being recommended to my comrades, not to my enemies. So we all keep each other busy nicely, within our own silos. And Google wins again.
