Nothing is stopping anyone, which is why a lot of anyones did just that. Some market their vapor-money better than others, get a following and gain more traction from people who are afraid to miss out. And a new crypto-currency is born. It is not money, it is religion. You have to believe in it. Note that what our boy here promotes as the good thing about crypto-currencies (skipping the middle party) is actually what renders all of them literally worthless. Money has value because the issuer is a strong party that you cannot ignore, that will likely be around longer than you will be, that forces you to pay taxes over every $/Euro/(whatever real coin) you make. THAT is what gives money value, why people need and want it. None of this applies to your typical crypto-currency.
