  1. The only reason Hamas was supported was to weaken the PLO: divide and conquor. The PLO was gaining sympathy around the world. It is a lot easier to demonize an anonymous Islamic militant group than a secular friendly looking arab with a towel on his head that speaks English. So they killed the latter and portrayed the former as a threat to their existence.
