  1. Invade and put the base in most ASEAN countries?. That would be very ambitious plan for China. The idea of China invading ASEAN countries is very difficult if not impossible, let alone setting up a base to deter US navy. Not because China has no power, but because ASEAN countries have very diverse socio-culture that very few aligned to China socio-culture. Take example the largest ASEAN country, Indonesia. Indonesia is the 4th most populous country and the largest Moslem country in the world. If we take a look to their history, in early 20th century there was a communism in Indonesia. Then goes the revolt in mid 1960's, and the aftermath is about 6 million communist died and diplomatic relationship with China and USSR lowered. Until recently, no communist party there. The similar story could be found in Malaysia and Singapore at around 1960's. For the people in those countries, especially Malaysia and Indonesia where Moslem is majority, just to hear word "communist" make them suspicious. let alone "working with communist" or even being "invaded by communist". Most Moslem people there still have a view that the Christianity (represented by the west) is Infidel, but communism has no God. Infidel still can be converted to the way of God, but not with communist. Should China insist to invade those countries, there will be another story of Afghanistan war in 1980's where USSR troops fight for conquest but Afghanistan's Mujahedeen fight for God, not just merely for freedom. US no need to deploy their troops, just supplied the weaponry is enough to expelled the communist out of Afghanistan. Few of the alignment to China is in economic perspectives. Those peoples welcome China money, China goods, but not China ideology. Those people want to trade with China and do not want to be dragged into a war with China, and that is the boundary. But should they invaded by China, they will fought much more like a holy war and less like an independence war, as we have seen their history back in 1960's..
