  1. It is more fun to proof that the set of a 2 by 2 matrices with everywhere the same value x with x not equal to 0 is a group. The determinant of such matrices is 0 but it is still a group.

  2. You can learn how to proof things by induction without fully understanding why it works. It is of course best to fully understand the why but maybe that will come later on, it is not 100% necessary at the beginning.

I think that if you want to learn math for your own enjoyment then you should start with things like the infinity of primes and modular arithmetic and not calculus, lin algebra and differential equations. Learning things like graph theory and maybe group theory broadens the mind and it shows the unity of mathematics. Don't limit yourself to engineering mathematics.
