  241. Japan (and Tokyo) have very low crime statistics. There is plenty of English signage at train/metro stations. Some restaurants have plastic models of the food and some have an English menu but not all. In Tokyo there is usually someone around who speaks English, in smaller places it can be a bit more difficult. The Japanese however are always willing to help. Taxi is expensive but train and metro are excellent. Buying a pasmo/suica card makes using public transport much easier. You can buy a Lonely Planet/Rough Guide book and these books explains almost everything that you need to know and also tell about Japanese culture and history.

Lijiang is extremely crowded with Chinese visitors, however the area around Lijiang is still very interesting and more authentic, you will see Tibetan style temples around Lijiang and you can visit a mountain glacier on the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, you can go up by cable car. There is also a yak meadow nearby that you can get to with another cable car. We were approached by a Chinese woman who spoke English and she guided us around in her car the next day when we were in Lijiang, that way we could visit the villages around Lijiang for not that much money. Lijiang itself is sadly for 90% a tourist trap. Lijiang city is beautiful but that beauty is hard to see, every old house in Lijiang has been converted into a souvenir shop, a hotel or a restaurant. Some of its temples have been destroyed by the cultural revolution but they have been rebuild. Dali is slightly less crowded, I explored the area around Dali with a rented bicycle and that was very nice, lots of different kinds of agriculture around Dali with farmers who use an ox for plowing and old pagoda's. i really liked the cycling. Kunming has the beautiful stone forest, also touristy but beautiful. There are also big caves near Kunming (JiuXiang caves). Very impressive. Kunming itself is probably a nice place to live but there isn't that much to see unless you are really interested in jade. You will not see that many Western tourists in these 3 places but lots of Chinese tourists.

I am not against skyscrapers if they indeed enhance efficient use of scarce resources but they don't make a city pop out. Seoul for example doesn't pop out at all, all South Korean cities look and feel extremely similar, some are bigger and some are smaller but non pop out. Same with Japanese cities.   572. I can't speak any Mandarin but I didn't run into many issues. Beijing has a rapidly expanding subway system (also to the airport), you don't need to take a taxi very often. You need to negotiate about everything and that gets annoying. I did become the victim of the swap scam. I bought a piece of pottery for 7 euro, when I came back to my hotel room, I noticed that it was damaged and I could remember that the seller did put it in a bag and did take it out of the bag before she gave it to me, she gave me a damaged one instead. I was scammed but the damage was only something like 3 or 4 euro because the damaged pottery is still nice to look at. Airb&b has a review system and that makes scamming harder. Just don't buy anything expensive (like jade or silk) and it is best to avoid group tours. You can buy clothes very cheaply in Beijing and maybe you still pay more than informed locals do but it will probably still be cheaper than in the US, Europe and Australia. And if not then don't buy it. I use a money belt for my passport, big money notes, debit and credit cards. I have a wallet too but the wallet never contains that much money.   612. Yes, some people obsess about living in the inner city of Amsterdam and they want to and need to pay big money to make that a reality. And then you want to destroy these expensive buildings that attract so many visitors and where so many people want to live. If nobody cares about a building and nobody wants to live in that building then it will indeed be replaced with something else but many people do care and tourism (like it or not) is a big money maker. Amsterdam will never be able to compete with Manhattan, Dubai or Shanghai when it comes to skyscrapers, it has to compete differently. I am not against skyscrapers outside the historic areas of Amsterdam, I am not against growth and change but I am against replacing. So many modern cities look already almost identical. It is like the shopping areas of airports, these areas look the same everywhere, it is always Toblerone chocolate. Do you find those shopping areas in airports inspiring or exciting?

There is now a North South metro line and that makes it possible to build extra high rises or skyscrapers in Amsterdam North. Rotterdam doesn't have all those old buildings but average income in Rotterdam is much lower than Amsterdam. American companies often prefer Amsterdam above Rotterdam when they want to open a new branch office because creative and talented people prefer to live in Amsterdam instead of Rotterdam. Changing Amsterdam into a new Rotterdam will not be a good thing. Those wealthy people have their reasons for wanting to live where they want to live, let them live where they want to live and don't destroy their homes.
