This is due to late modernization and gentrification of S.Korea. Japan modernized earlier so many buildings will appear more dated/older. Eg older subways and buildings in Europe compared to modern sky scrapers in China. It's not indicative of a country's well being or quality of life.

  159. As an East Asian traveller, this is the truth and disparity between the 2 countries. S.Korea - very rude, poor customer service especially supermarkets, private owned shops. Staff (women) are more concerned with looking at their phones and give a sulky face when attending customers. - small courtesies like hello, thank you doesn't exist in most restaurants and establishments. - bumping into you (no apology), yawning without closing mouth is extremely common, never hold door for others especially person behind. - Seoul and other major cities in Korea has a "dirty" feel and rank smell not dissimilar to developing countries. Rubbish and leaflets are thrown everywhere. At night, the entertainment areas are littered in a sea of garbage. - Dog poop is often found on public grounds. Unlike Japanese or Singaporeans who clean up after their pets, Koreans don't have this courtesy. - There's no tipping culture in Korea but sometimes you are overcharged for staying too long. - Tourist traps abound especially with street food. Vendors overcharging foreigners is a common sight. - Scams, especially those associated with religious cults
