When I was a kid, we used to go to the radio shack, get the copper clad board, ink what we wanted to keep, dip the board in the acid solution to dissolve the copper, then drill the board. It amazes me how similar early silicon processes were to PCB processes. (There were PCB’s before there were silicon wafers!) So many processes are similar across so many fields… book printing, silicon, circuit boards, stamped body panels for cars, etc!

@TAP7a - Austin Texas had fabs there, for decades. People build fabs where existing workforce exists, so one does not need to import educated workforce from all over the place (very expensive.) Education is important, so is experience. A child growing up, hearing the war stories from their parents of early clean rooms, will have likely received a substantial informal education base that is intangibly important while layering on new technologies.

@DerekWoolverton - I was amazed at the clean rooms in RIT… and how the facility floated on its own elastic foundation!
