“Hydrogen… leak” Today, electrical line loss in transport happens in heat, so a little loss in hydrogen is no big deal. This problem is over-rated.

During a transition from Carbon to hydrogen, the first steps can be painless, not impacting pipes or appliances. No high pressure tanks needed. In January 2020, natural gas supply at UK’s Keele University was successfully blended with 20% Hydrogen. The 20% proportion was chosen because the blend won’t affect gas pipes & appliances. Natural gas heating generates about a third of the UK emissions driving global warming. 20% blend in Britain would reduce emissions of CO2 by six million tonnes - equivalent to taking 2.5 million cars off the road.

@marcwinkler - “leakage of natural gas… nothing compared to what hydrogen leakage” There is no real data demonstrating a massive increase in h2 leakage over ng leakage, as of 2020… concerns are extrapolations, no real numbers, highly speculative at best. H2 is already being produced, shipped, contained, piped, and used in: Australia, Japan, US, UK, and mainland Europe… India is on-tap to become a major producer & consumer!

“high pressure tanks” Or, irregular shaped medium & low pressure tanks can be used, similar to what is done with Li-Ion batteries in laptops, where they can be made to fit the space available, without resorting to high pressure.

@PurpleMomgoose - “pump water up a hill” This takes a lot of land space… and water evaporates. This being said, it is a great option! Splitting atoms of H2O is a way to store hydrogen & oxygen for future combustion, and less gas will be lost to H2 than will be lost to water evaporation.

@jimsouthgate4280 - “splitter sending hydrogen into pistons and oxygen out the exhaust” Actually, it is best to place the oxygen & hydrogen into the piston for combustion, eliminating NO2 emissions. Sticking solar panels on the roof of the car, constantly splitting H2 & O2 while charging batteries after O2 & H2 tanks are full, allows the car to be more efficient while driving & parked, even without being plugged in. Throw in regenerative breaking. In a big rig 18 wheeler, stick panels on the trailer. Water is a pretty nice thought, for cars & trucks, but I personally have never seen a model based on a complete system like this.

@bscott53 - “plant based… into hydrocarbons… hydrocarbons can never be clean” That is the most backwards thinking I have ever heard… that reasoning is so backwards. Plant based hydrocarbons are the absolutely most clear option there is on the planet, since plants consume CO2 and produce O2!

@Land-of-reason - “wind turbines produce AC” They don’t have to. Generators can be wired for DC. A full wave rectifying bridge turns AC into DC. Either way, H2 can be easily produced. It might be best to produce H2 & O2 off shore using wind turbines, piping the gases back to the shore. H2 and O2 sent back to the shore can supplement natural gas supplies. These can be stored, unlike wind power. This can slowly eliminate natural gas supplies as they run out. H2, especially for people by coasts, looks like an amazing option to supplement our energy needs.

Natural gas prices at the Henry Hub have run ~ $3/MMBtu in recent years. LNG appears to be 30%-40% higher than NG, gets closer to the price of Hydrogen. If Hydrogen was only used during peak energy times, it would cost the European consumer the same amount of money as they are being charged now. The big question now is… is domestic H2 better than LNG from a foreign nation or no natural gas from a nation invading Europe? Japan & US have been mixing hydrogen with Natural Gas for generation. It is a shame an alternative was not considered, from a international security perspective. Domestic H2 from offshore wind power should have been the plan, all along, for UK & Europe. At least that money would be spent on European jobs & guaranteed freedom of European nations from Asian aggressors.
