  2. @ - someone is always going to have to pay car insurance… if you are paying for a ride, you are paying car insurance. If you are not speeding, you are going to lose some time in travel, so you can resolve speeding tickets today using cruise control with this caveat. Municipalities don’t hire enforcement to make a profit, they would be fired tomorrow if people would just do the right thing.

  3.  @EdisonMotors - you can probably put an old school dash mounted toggle switch in parallel with the on-floor high beam switch… so a broken floor switch can still be bypassed until the shift is over, from a safety perspective

  5. Software only needs to be upgraded if the software is buggy or vulnerable… if next generation cars are buggy & vulnerable — I don’t want them. Firmware can always be upgraded in the dealership, anyway.

  6. The engineering goals are better known by the designers than by the people taking it apart… engineering requirements are being backwards-engineered through inference, not in reality, so they really can’t score it if they don’t know the requirements.

  7. The human cost in dropping a battery to replace a cell basically costs close to the amount of replacing the whole battery. That is what was missed.

  8. 16:58 - “we make it thinner” So, the 800v battery pack will need ~2x as much metal for the can, which means 800v will have slightly less battery jelly roll & more can metal in the same space. That is too bad, just to get some percentage faster charging.

Auto magazines always seem to ignore American 🇺🇸 cars with hybrid & ev technology… I remember when there was practically an embargo on the Ford Escape Hybrid & Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid - the auto review industry just said they were not going to review it and did not give a good reason. I was in the market for a car back then, both features were pretty high on my list, for a crossover/suv type vehicle, and few car companies had such a beast

  11.  @raybod1775  - “paying these car costs per ride… dramatically cheaper” Ride share is more expensive than owning, for people who must travel to work every day. Cost in tax subsidies for mostly empty bus routes + fares is dramatically more expensive than owning. Rail is super expensive in tax subsidies + fares. Transportation costs are still needed to get from the aggregation points. Having volunteered with refugees and post-prison people trying to go straight for nearly 25 years, they had always found owning to be less expensive in the end. Maybe these human-free driving cheap cars will make the difference? Could be. Let’s hope.

  13. $26.6K is the base Bolt EV model is still too expensive, and $7.5K in rebates is the wrong way to go. We should not be printing money to subsidize the market… it is hurting the poor through inflation and the cars are still to expensive for the poor.

Hi @koeniglicher  - I own 4 of the 8s4p batteries, from a MachE, I started backward engineering the pin outs, I now know enough pins to make it useful, but not enough to figure out what the manufacturer of the connector is. I tried to go to ford, to buy some cabling, but they wanted a VIN, which I do not have. I just need a stationary application. I used breadboard to header pin wire extenders to connect to the 2x sockets on each battery, but those wires are very thin. I may be stuck with them. 👎 Maybe I can take some more photos, zoom in more, and take your suggestion…

  17. Cell production is useless, when a cell could fit in a phone 📱 or be the size of an airplane ✈️ wing. KWh makes more sense to them in this arena.

  22. I thought the thin aluminum was a fire hazard. An ocean going vessel from Europe, carrying electric cars, recently sank due to a fire onboard. I believe there were some VW’s onboard. Batteries must be respected.

  30. It holds different battery configurations, for different distance options, as well as different power configuration for 2x wheel & 4x wheel drive The battery box can hold more batteries, if the consumer wants to spend more to drive longer & use more power

  31. I don’t think one would want to pump any kind of binding chemical under ground. The idea to pump the brine out, run it through the process, and pump the brine without lithium back into the ground is better in these lithium laden areas. Today, miners are not pumping enough water back into the underground caverns, sink holes are forming, and slowly destroying the mines. This process has the potential to solves a lot of problems in South & Central America, where they are currently destroying the underground caverns holding the brine.

  35.  @JasonWW2000  - “shows the military what is possible” And I think this is exactly the point… Using a former military civilian brand helps communicate that the objective put forth by the current administration to decarbonize has a possible roadmap… if they can afford it. Not just for show, but a VERY working prototype as a basis for future military contract. At least the military has a listing of features to write into their RFP, now, which a GM contract can fulfill. On the negative side… A bullet in a battery would cause Lithium Batteries to go up in flames, though… unlike a petrol tank, which just springs leaks (and this can be mitigated with self sealing gas tanks, so liquid carbon fuel still seems to be more practical in a war.)

  39. Any ICE engine with van inverter will run a house for days, if the inverter is big enough… gasoline supplies an order of magnitude more power than a battery with the same volume

  41. 14:25 - that piece of foam after the wheel & windows before the battery… could that be to keep air moving, so the air can go into the windows, to help reduce drag & direct some remaining air to cool the battery through the holes? After hearing about the piece of rubber before the wheel, to direct air, this seems to make perfect sense.

  42.  @martinhollett3160  - they chunk lead acid batteries before recycling them. It is very resource efficient to just bring the whole battery in for shredding, much more expensive to give it to humans to take apart (and possible get electrocuted, then the cost REALLY goes up!!!)

  44.  @royh6526  - “how about less dirty” Heavy metals buried in the ground mitigated by energy expensive industrial systems to try to isolate the heavy metals from batteries & solar panels??? Compared to burning natural gas or butane hydrocarbons, held in a steel tank which is 100% recyclable, which consumption produces plant food that is naturally recycled? I definitely prefer the less dirty solution. I am not against batteries, we need batteries for very portable solutions, like cell phones, laptops. Liquid fuels store much more energy than batteries, which is why people use butane powered soldering irons and gas powered welding torches (and not battery powered irons & torches.) The right energy source should be used for the right job, so as to best use our energy resources efficiency. Carbon has the ability to form 4 covalent bonds, meaning living things can create & break down sugars as fuel, in an indefinitely recyclable process. Indefinite recyclability is clean, this should be the goal of humanity. Anything else produces waste and to some degree becomes morally wrong.

  46.  @Stefan_Dahn  - This is basically a factory. The solution is generator, not solar & batteries, except for a short period until the generator kicks in. The amount of power required in batteries is enormous, the cost of solar is enormous, and being as far north in the northern hemisphere reduces the benefit. For small homes, it can be done, I am getting ready to roll out my own panels , as a DIY. Let’s see how Germany will do with severely curtailed natural gas, the natural gas turbines are needed to make up the differences in power when solar is not available.

Dave - “basically a factory”  @Stefan_Dahn  - “NOT a factory, just offices” Power tools, air compressors, warehouse level high raised ceilings, moving vehicles around, tearing vehicles apart in the facility, etc. So, maybe not a factory, definitely not offices. Something in between? I think so. “ALL IN for renewables” If so, a second natural gas pipeline would not have been getting built from Russia. “gas storage full faster than planned” If renewables was 100% functional, Germany would not need gas storage. Renewables are needed, we should increase usage, but we must introduce renewables where each source is capable of delivering base power when their windmill is not spinning or the sunlight is not shining. There are many solutions, they need to be implemented, with every installation.
