The human cost in dropping a battery to replace a cell basically costs close to the amount of replacing the whole battery. That is what was missed.

@etbadaboum - “prove it” Just look at an Apple battery in a laptop. Pretty soon, I bet Tesla will stop using cells, entirely.

@etbadaboum - “know anything about battery” - yep, using recycled EV batteries at home for projects. Big user of rechargeable batteries, for years. I had rechargeable batteries catch on fire in my house on a charger… they must be treated with respect.

@nimajneb02 - “ ‘right’ solution for the environment” Lead acid batteries are chunked & get north of 90% recycled. Any large scale recycling will not worry about individual cell reclaiming. All energy is ‘dirty’ somehow…

@marcelbeaucamp9330 - the BMS is at the end of the unit. It almost looks like a big circuit board between the batteries and the foam!

@martinhollett3160 - they chunk lead acid batteries before recycling them. It is very resource efficient to just bring the whole battery in for shredding, much more expensive to give it to humans to take apart (and possible get electrocuted, then the cost REALLY goes up!!!)

@martinhollett3160 - “batteries are better for the environment” All energy is dirty. Batteries are not the rainbows coming out of the rear end of unicorns that politically oriented people say they are.

@royh6526 - “how about less dirty” Heavy metals buried in the ground mitigated by energy expensive industrial systems to try to isolate the heavy metals from batteries & solar panels??? Compared to burning natural gas or butane hydrocarbons, held in a steel tank which is 100% recyclable, which consumption produces plant food that is naturally recycled? I definitely prefer the less dirty solution. I am not against batteries, we need batteries for very portable solutions, like cell phones, laptops. Liquid fuels store much more energy than batteries, which is why people use butane powered soldering irons and gas powered welding torches (and not battery powered irons & torches.) The right energy source should be used for the right job, so as to best use our energy resources efficiency. Carbon has the ability to form 4 covalent bonds, meaning living things can create & break down sugars as fuel, in an indefinitely recyclable process. Indefinite recyclability is clean, this should be the goal of humanity. Anything else produces waste and to some degree becomes morally wrong.

@saxplayingcompnerd - “so much for being green” Just cleared a bunch of old growth trees for my solar panels which will get 15 years use. Being green is a ridiculous phrase for the solar and electric car impacts are. The phrase is merely a gimmick. They are just another route for us to transfer, store, and consume energy. All energy is dirty, in some way.

Recycle by shredding them & harvesting the elements… lead acid batteries are chunked to get 90+% recyclability, not by cell replacement when there is a bad cell.

Costs too much to replace a cell, in human time… plus high voltage DC can kill a human worker. No one replaces bad cells in a lead acid battery today, and workers will not be killed touching the terminals! Shred these batteries, the same way lead acid batteries are chunked, and they will get 90+% recyclability out of them, just like we do with lead acid batteries, when 1 out of 6 cells go bad.

Return it as a core, shred it, and harvest the important elements out of it. Lead acid batteries do not replace individual cells, they just chunk the whole things.

@Teddy_M85 - we don’t really get credit for batteries when return them. We get charged more when we buy a battery, and we get it back when we return the core. The laws behind lithium ion battery recycling are not really there yet. We’ll see.

@pashko90 - and then you will bury the pack in your back yard when it is at 0% usability problem stick it in a landfill. Shredding these things is a more efficient way to recycle, just like chunking lead acid batteries, and achieve 90+% recyclability.

@pashko90 - good work on replacing cells! The day will come, when they get buried in the back yard by someone when they can’t be made useful. I am watching it happen with solar panels & lithium batteries, already. This is especially the case with people buying land that has a solar project on it in rural areas… the “more ethical” just pull a permit to bury it all, and they are being granted permits to do so. I can’t imagine the rest.
