If they didn't, Gaza is barely 175 sq/miles and Israel has nearly 400 Combat Aircraft. If all Israel cared about was defeating HAMAS, they could have turned their Bombers loose and turned Gaza into a Parking Lot in 2 days. So don't live in that delusional place where Israel couldn't level Gaza anytime they wanted to.
