It's easy to overlook the fact that a tooth's PERIODONTAL LIGAMENT influences BRAIN function. There are many studies linking teeth with cognitive function. Recently we understand how signals from the periodontal ligament (around teeth) connect through a neurotransmitter called OREXIN to our sleep-wake cycle, eyesight and cognitive thinking. This is a vital link between being IGNORED by the aggressive implant industry. Root canals between 1980 and 2000 were generally toxic but TODAY a root canal (by an endodontist) can be a great treatment solution. As a DDS, I would NOT select an implant (with loss of my periodontal ligament) over a root canal for reasons above. Implants are easier treatments for a DDS and they may "seem" a cool way to go... Remember a root canal treated tooth retains valuable periodontal fiber attachments and this has vital connections to cognitive function that can never be replaced once a tooth has been extracted. The lesson may be learned too late - if influencers remain unaware and promote extraction of savable teeth.

There is insufficient emphasis on the benefits of TEETH on the brain, eye and circadian rhythm health. We need to save teeth when possible and most root canals done by endodontists are VERY successful. Regular dentists way prefer you have an implant - but this is irresponsible. The periodontal ligaments of a tooth has links and creates a response in the brain - the release of orexin when the supporting periodontal ligaments are compressed. An implant has no such ligaments. When a tooth is extracted and an implant is placed - you will not have this orexin reaction any more. it is no surprise that people who have lost all their teeth often experience circadian rhythm changes, eye health deterioration, and cognitive function changes. It is very irresponsible to consider that all root canals are toxic -it is simply untrue.
