The CCP always does. But as Communists, they will ALWAYS keep one book on the real facts being secretly hidden, and other sets of books with inflated figures for their propaganda means.
As this video reported, it is not only the severe levels of pollution that decimated the environment and the crop productions. Also it is the urbanization of the previously most fertile farmlands, which seriously harmed the efficiency and effectiveness of the agricultural means. Simply put, the globalization policy of building factories and cities on those lands, left the PRC with the second and the third rate farmlands around. Therefore, those other lands which are less suited for agricultural needs, are now used for the primary source of producing foods.
Hence the heavy use of chemicals, fertilizers and insecticides to produce food. This increased the cost and drastically reduced the quality and the nutrients of the food. Many of those farmers who were forced to sell their lands, they cannot go back to what they do. So they moved into the cities and doing other works. The PRC all of the sudden has less arable lands and far fewer farmers to grow the food they needed to be self-sustaining.
