  1. I'm surprised the Geiger counter electronics aren't sheilded in any way. The counter tube should be exposed but the electronics sheilded.

  2. Iodine pills are probably more useful to the average person than a Geiger counter. If there's a severe radiation release near you, go away or do one iodine pill daily for about 3 months afterward - to protect yourself from Iodine-131, for about 10 of its half lives. After 80 days (ten half-lives of I-131), the environment will no longer present an existential risk to you.
