  1. Not only Zinn. Michel Foucault's histories are also somewhat inventive and influential. If you're going to write social history, you'll be forever generalizing about life for the majority. The clever leftwing historian picks out rare events and generalizes them by writing as if most people in history are experiencing those things. They also compare history with the present and treat the present day as a norm; so condemn history because people back then, failed to live up to utopian ideals.
