Everything said, the Dalai Lama is not a grandfather, father, uncle, family member of this child. This behavior is totally inappropriate from any major spiritual leader. Mr. Jigme Ugen explanation does not excuse this behavior because the Dalai Lam is not a family member of this child he just met. What the Dalai Lama did not respected the child space. Also, I have not heard the Dalai Lama giving a speech about this. The fact remains - it is unacceptable behavior of a highly respected spiritual leader to ask of a child to bite his tongue. He disrespected the child's boundaries, you can obviously see it with the child's body language and the monk sitting to the left side of the child... Also, he is a human and a man, he is not infallible. I have a Tibetan friend and he has a shadow too.

@dorj4711 thank you for your reply and you are right, listening and observing is important. Courage, humility are important too. I am not accusing anyone. Justo going by whatever happened: he asked a boy that he did not know to bite his tongue… this is in appropriate in the western world and therefore if he wants to be a leader in the world, he needs to publicly apologize to the faces of people that view this act as in appropriate even it it is a projection of themselves with exposure to sexual abuse. It is appropriate for an adult to apologize from the heart t directly and take ownership. This is what it means to be simply AN ADULT.

@dorj4711 this is what an apology from the heart sounds like: “I am sorry my behavior has offended you. I understand that has triggered many abuses you may have experienced in the past. I am really sorry my conduct triggered them. I was being silly and playful, did not mean any disrespect. Please excuse me, it won’t happen again.”

@dorj4711 thank you for your reply. It looks like you really care. Yet, it comes down to the leader to speak directly and clearly to his audience. We are dancing around this issue when the culprit has not spoken. I wonder what is this all about… there is a saying in Spanish: “ El que calla otorga” meaning when you do not speak up you are confirming what they say. It takes courage to speak up, to face the music. I personally do not care about what he did… I am speaking up generally. I did loose respect after that. Yet I understand he is a man after all…

@dorj4711 I disagree with you that it is the Tibetan culture to bite each other tongues. You are lying. They stick out each other tongues. What it comes down to this is that the Dalai Lama is a celebrity and celebrities get a pass on misbehavior. Look at the Popes throughout history. Absolute power corrupts, absolutely!

@dechentashi2936 telling someone he is lying is not uncivil. Is it true that all Tibetans go around sticking the tongue on children? If you do, please stay away from my children and abstain yourself from doing it. Words are cheap. Lead by example.

@dechentashi2936 are you suggesting that you rather be an idiot?
