Good Background - At the end of the 1800s, the world had a problem. Whale oil was getting scarce for lamps. I guess it was men like Rockefeller that thought outside the box and figured out how to use the oil that bubbled into streams in Pennsylvania. Then they figured out a lot of other uses for the stuff. It's proliferation was helped by Civil War subsidies. (Yeh - the government) Oil certainly seems to be a problem today. All sorts of defense spending has been spent to ensure the oil is flowing to where it needs to go. The economy has been greatly upset by the people handling it's distribution. Innocent people have been hurt when they withhold the stuff. Scientists are telling us that it's doing bad things for the planet. Maybe government money is needed once again to find real alternatives to using the stuff. The Saudis can irrigate and grow corn.
